One Punahou School senior just barely outdid the other at the final round of the David S. Ishii Foundation/Hawaii High School Athletic Association Girls State Golf Championships at Kauai's Wailua Municipal Golf Course Tuesday afternoon.
Allisen Corpuz birdied the fourth playoff hole to fend off her Buffanblu teammate and three-time defending state champion Mariel Galdiano to capture medalist honors.
Corpuz held the overnight lead after an opening-round 70 Monday. Her two stroke lead on Galdiano entering Tuesday was wiped away on the very first hole. Corpuz made a double-bogey 7 on the 497-yard, par 5 and went 3-over par for the round after a bogey on the 172-yard, par-3 third hole. However, she birdied No. 7 and went out with a front-nine score of 38. Corpuz went birdie-par-birdie on the 11th, 12th and 13th holes and made par the rest of the way to finish with a 72.
Galdiano, who was seeking an unprecedented fourth individual state title, opened her round with a birdie on the first hole and played the front nine at 1-under par. She birdied the 10th and 17th holes on the back and her lone bogey was on the 416-yard, par-4 15th hole. Galdiano shot a 2-under par 70 for the round.
The Punahou duo were the only two golfers in the 66-player field to finish under par.
Mid-Pacific's Erica Chiang finished third, six strokes back of Corpuz and Galdiano. Kaiser's Malia Nam (149) was fourth and Maui's Jasmine Cabajar (151) rounded out the top five.
The Buffanblu won their fourth consecutive team championship with a total score of 440 strokes. It is the ninth title in school history.
Iolani placed second with 470 strokes and Mid-Pacific, Maui and Kaiser each shot 473 to tie for third place.
