For the fifth consecutive year, it will be an all-Western Division final for the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I softball tournament.
Two-time defending OIA champion Mililani will play Kapolei about 30 minutes after the Division II title game, which is slated for 5 p.m.
In 38 OIA championships, the East and West are tied at 19. But the West has won 13 of the last 16, including the last six. That means the East once held a hefty advantage in the series. Kailua won 12 of its OIA-leading 14 titles during the 1980s and 1990s. Since 1990, the East has won only three titles, twice by Kailua (2003 and 2006) and Roosevelt (2009).
For the fourth consecutive year, the West will send five teams to states to one from the East. From 2006 to 2012, the ratio has been 4-2.
And it just isn't a numbers deal for the West recently. In this year's tournament alone, West teams won seven of the first eight games (first round and quarterfinals). Six of the wins ended with the 10-run differential mercy rule. The other resulted in a no-hitter. Moreover, the only game the East won, East third seed Roosevelt barely beat West sixth seed Waianae, 9-8. Even in the fifth-place semifinal, Kailua squandered a 6-1 lead in the top of the seventh and eventually lost 14-12 in 11 innings.
Meanwhile, Mililani will be seeking its third title in a row and 11th overall, second-best in the OIA. The Trojans are 10-6 in title games.
Kapolei last played in the OIA title game in 2012 and 2013, but lost each time to nemesis Campbell.
Kapolei and Mililani have played against each for the title twice. The Hurricanes won in 2004 and 2005, their only league titles to date.
