Hawaiian Electric Game of the Week
Fontanilla triumphs for fourth ILH judo title

KAPALAMA HEIGHTS — It was a triumphant, yet bittersweet night for Jaclyn Fontanilla at Friday night's Interscholastic League of Honolulu judo championships at Kamehameha's Kekuhaupio Gym.

Fontanilla, a Kamehameha senior, captured her fourth consecutive individual league title by ippon (full point) over Damien's Kaili Labanon in the 154-pound final, but her Warriors came up short in defending their team crown.

"I was really hoping that we would as a team because we've been hearing that, ‘You guys are able to,' and I believed in the team and I know our girls are strong and I was hoping that we would come through, but it's OK. I still love them and hopefully we can work toward states again."

Fontanilla, who won the state championship as a freshman and a sophomore before finishing second last year, shot a number of right-side tai-otoshi (body drop) attempts to no avail, but finally broke through for the first score of the match with a left tai-otoshi about two minutes and 20 seconds into the bout.

"That's my number one throw; that's the throw that I go to and it's been the one that I've been trying to perfect since freshmen year, since I figured out that that's the throw that I wanted to do," said Fontanilla, who also defeated Labanon for her third ILH title a year ago.

Fontanilla earned a waza-ari (half point) for the throw, then transitioned seamless into a kame-shiho gatame (upper quarter lock) for a pin. She pressed Labanon for another waza-ari, which consequently ended the match with an ippon.

The last four-time ILH champion was Kamehameha's Bree Rapoza (2010-'13). Fontanilla, who was a freshman in Rapoza's final season, said she did her best to quell her nerves prior to the match.

"My family is always there to support me and maybe I get in my own head, but I think it was my own stress that I gave myself," Fontanilla said. "It was just there, but it helps to push me. I was getting really anxious, I was like ‘I really want to play. I want to play.' That's just me though."

The Warriors had three other individual titlists in three-time winners Hilinai Meyer (109 pounds) and Teshya Alo (129) and first-time champion Kamalei Marrotte (172), but were unable to surpass Punahou, which accumulated 147 points to Kamehameha's 102. Third place went to Iolani, with 87 points, Damien was fourth (73), Mid-Pacific fifth (55) and Pac-Five sixth (31).

Points from Friday were incorporated to those accumulated by teams over the course of the regular season. Punahou, which entered the tournament with an 18-point lead on Kamehameha, had three individual winners in Jenna Enoka (98 pounds), Bailey Hoshino (103) and Taryn Ichimura (122).

"It's great; It's really great," Buffanblu coach Greg Chow said. "As always, the people who work hard and practice hard play well and the people who don't practice so hard, don't place so well and I think we were just fortunate this year. We had enough girls who trained hard enough and put it together to perform tonight."

It was the second championship for Hoshino, who won at 98 pounds as a freshman last year. She defeated Iolani's Kari Tanji with two waza-aris — the first on a left tai-otoshi and the second on a counter of an uchimata (inner thigh throw) attempt by Tanji — 103-pound final.

"I played (Tanji) earlier in the year and we tied, but this time I just wanted it," Hoshino said.

Enoka and Ichimura were both runners-up a season ago, but made good on their chance at redemption — albeit at the expense of some teammates.

Enoka defeated Sarah Obra-Nakata in the 98-pound final, while Ichimura topped Tia Inoue at 122 pounds. Wisdom Matsuzaki placed second at 139 pounds, Kristen Koike finished third at 115 and the trio of Emily Fujioka (109), Kiarra Young (122) and Ming Cheng-Leever (129) turned in fourth-place finishes.

Other repeat champions were Iolani's Teniya Alo at 122 pounds and Damien Frances Nosis at 220.

The top four place-finishers in each weight class qualified for next Saturday's Hawaii High School Athletic Association State Championships at the University of Hawaii's Stan Sheriff Center.
