Hawaiian Electric Game of the Week
Iolani runs away with third straight ILH boys judo crown

KAPALAMA HEIGHTS — As expected, Iolani claimed its third consecutive Interscholastic League of Honolulu boys judo team championship Friday night.

The Raiders, led by five individual weight classes winners, pulled away from the field with 180 points to runner-up Punahou's 111. Mid-Pacific finished third with 87 points, Pac-Five fourth (71), Kamehameha fifth (70), Damien sixth (35) and Saint Louis seventh (26).

Points from Friday were incorporated to those accumulated by teams over the course of the regular season. Iolani entered the tournament with an 18-point lead on the Buffanblu.

Juniors KJ Pascua and Dane Yamashiro won their second straight ILH titles. Pascua defeated Kamehameha's Kama Suzuki Scott by yuko (quarter point) in the 178-pound final, while Yamashiro won by ippon (full point) over Mid-Pacific's Aiden Tse at 285 pounds.

"We came into this year confident, hoping that we would be able to take it again and that was a team goal for a lot of us and I'm just happy that we got it," said Pascua, who won at 161 pounds last year.

Pascua's match went the full four minutes. The only score came near the mid-point on a left uchimata (inner thigh throw) by Pascua, who weighed in at just 163 pounds Friday.

"KJ is very light for that division," Iolani coach Dan Nishita said of the three-sport athlete. "He'd probably be better suited for 161, but I know he's trying to get ready for football so he's trying to get his weight up, but he took care of what he needed to take care of and overcame a lot of weight differential and height differential and he performed."

Yamashiro needed just 32 seconds to dispatch Tse in his lone bout of the tournament. He scored a yuko with a ouchi-gari (major inner reaping throw) just eight seconds in and worked his way into a kesa-gatame (scarf hold) for the pin and eventually, the ippon.

"Dane is all about consistency," Nishita said of Yamashiro, the reigning state champion at his weight class. "Unfortunately he didn't have as much competition in the ILH as we would like to get him ready for (the state tournament), but he got his work in. He got his job done."

Pascua and Yamashiro, both of whom helped the Raiders to a state wrestling crown in February, are third-year members of the judo program.

"It was really a team effort and it's fun being on all the (championship teams)," said Yamashiro. "My freshman year it wasn't really expected of us, but now I think it's really helped to have us all there for each other and our team really got stronger throughout the year."

Two other Raiders — Hunter Fujiwara and Colby Watase — improved upon second-place finishes from a season ago. Fujiwara was second at 108 last year, but was first at 114 Friday and Watase was the runner-up at 114 in 2015, but claimed the 121-division this season. Fujiwara beat out Mid-Pacific's Kyler Asao and Watase topped his teammate Travis Kon.

Saiaiga Fautanu was Iolani's other individual champion at 198 pounds. He defeated Kamehameha's Amir Mirza in the title bout.

The Raiders also got a runner-up finish from Charles Kam at 220 pounds and the trio of Dayne Torigoe, Chad Sanehira and Kaysen Takenaka turned in third-place finishes at 103, 145 and 161 pounds, respectively.

"I'm happy for them. They worked hard so it's a good accomplishment for them," Nishita said. "I mean, three years ago that was our first championship so this good progress that we've seen with the program, so it's good to see that their hard work is paying off."

Damien's Landon Obra (108 pounds) and Punahou's Nicolas Nakaoka (145) each won their second straight ILH title. Nakaoka moved up after winning at 132 pounds a year ago.

Pac-Five had a pair of champions in Luke Horiuchi (161 pounds) and Trinity Fautanu (220). Horiuchi lost to Pascua in the ILH final last season.

Kamehameha's lone titlist was 132-pounder, Makana Wong.

The top four place-finishers in each weight class qualified for next Saturday's Hawaii High School Athletic Association State Championships at the University of Hawaii's Stan Sheriff Center.
