ALIAMANU — Farrington outlasted Kaimuki in straight sets to capture the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division II championship game Thursday night at James Alegre Gymnasium.
The Governors won by set scores of 25-21, 25-23 and 25-23 to win their fourth league title in school history and first since 2013.
"It was great to get this win," said Farrington's Elia Mose. "After three years of not coming here and winning the OIA, just winning again and putting Farrington on the map, it feels great."
Mose and middle Christian Latu each had 11 kills to lead Farrington to victory. Tanielu Alaivanu-Afe added six kills, Chris Afe-Alaivanu had five more and Jacob Medeiros and Jerry Killion each had two apiece.
Setters John Salacup and Richard Pili combined for 30 assists and senior libero Joziah Anakalea had five aces and 21 digs, which were both match-highs. Medeiros added 13 digs and Mose had 10 more to finish with a double-double.
Although both teams had young, first-year players, it was the Governors that stood tall to withstand the pressure. Farrington rose to the occasion in the late stages of every game while Kaimuki crumbled under pressure.
"Under this pressure I understand. Most of them are new players. They don't have the experience (yet)," said Kaimuki coach Kenji Shibata.
The Bulldogs jumped out to an early advantage in game one and held a slim 11-8 lead after an ace by Spencer Chipenii. Farrington stormed back and went on a 0-0 run to take a commanding 17-11 lead with Medeiros back to serve. The Bulldogs scored the next three points, but the Governors were able to pull ahead to take the set.
Kaimuki once again took the early lead in game two and led 13-10 at the media timeout. The Governors rallied and then began to trade points with the Bulldogs until the score was netted up at 18 each.
Christian Ono notched Kaimuki's next three points and had Farrington on the brink with a 21-19 lead. Two errors straight errors and an ace from Mose put Farrington up 22-21, but Kaimuki would come back and get the next two points. The Governors avoided having to go into extra time by scoring the next three points to win set two by two points.
"The hype, the support of our bench and the support of everybody in the stands, it really brought us back and our communication together," said Mose.
The third set was a similar story and Farrington completed the sweep, 25-23.
Ono led the Bulldogs with nine kills.
