PEARL CITY – When it rains, it pours, as Moanalua found out in Wednesday's opening round of the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I tournament.

Pearl City sent 11 batters to the plate in an eight-run first inning en route to a 17-1 win against Na Menehune at the soggy Chargers' diamond.

To top it off, Tyanna Kaaialii and Kristin Frost combined on a no-hitter that was called after the top of the fifth inning because of the 10-run differential mercy rule. Kaaialii pitched the first four innings and Frost the fifth.

The Chargers (7-6), seventh in the Hawaiian Electric Power Rankings, will play at No. 5 Kaiser in one quarterfinal Thursday. Moanalua (5-8) is done for the season.

If there was anything the Chargers took away from this game, which was played in the rain ranging from drizzling to pouring, was that they were able to execute in the first inning when the game was still close. They stole three bases and advanced runners on sacrifices.

"Today, we really executed on both sides," Pearl City coach Chad Obara said. "If we can do that, I think we can have a good result (vs. Kaiser)."

What really helps Pearl City is that the West is highly competitive top down. West fifth seed Leilehua beat East fourth seed Castle, 15-1, and West third seed Kapolei downed East sixth seed Kaimuki, 12-2. Both games also ended after five because of the mercy rule. The West's sixth seed, Waianae, pushed East third seed Roosevelt, in a 9-8 loss in the only competitive game of the day.

The West fourth-seed Chargers' only losses were to the three teams ahead of them: Campbell, Mililani and Kapolei. The competition in the West might be to the division's advantage in the tournament.

"I said it early in the season (that) we could go 10-2 or we could go 2-10," Obara said. "We ended up going 6-6…It's a tough division."

Kaaialii gave up a run in part to walking two and hitting a batter in the fourth. The run scored on a force play at third. Kaaialii hit three batters in the game and struck out six. Frost came in from left field to pitch the fifth. The only runner to reach came on an error.

Meanwhile, Moanalua pitcher Kyler Tsukada faced just eight batters and got one out. She was charged with seven runs. Shanelle Lum came left field to pitch. In 3 1/3 innings, she allowed 10 runs, six earned.
