Top Performers
Waipahu's Russell, Hawaii Baptist's Moku garner weekly honor

Male Athlete of the Week: Kobie Russell, Waipahu baseball
The Waipahu baseball team made quite a run in last week's Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I tournament and at the forefront of it all was Kobie Russell.

Russell, a 6-foot junior, batted .500 (6 for 12) in the Marauders' four tournament games. He recorded two hits in games against Mililani Thursday, Kalani Friday and Pearl City Saturday and despite going 0 for 3 against Moanalua Wednesday, Rusell turned a complete game on the mound, allowing just one run on one hit with 10 strikeouts against five walks.

"We rely on him heavily to pitch," Waipahu coach Jared Abreu said of Russell. "He kind of struggled in the beginning of the season, but I think once he got more confident in his pitches, he became more effective, especially with his off-speed stuff."

The Marauders, who finished sixth in the seven-team Western Division, posted a 4-1 upset of East third-seed Moanalua before going on to topple West No. 2 seed and then-sixth-ranked Mililani by the same score in Thursday's quarterfinal round.

Russell singled twice, drove in a run and scored another in the win over the Trojans. He helped backup the solid pitching effort of Jaron Sugimoto, who allowed one run on seven hits in a complete game.

"That's our one-two punch for pitching," Abreu said. "We rely heavily on them, not only for pitching, but for defense, too. Especially with them only being juniors, that helps a lot."

The win over Mililani put Waipahu into Friday's semifinals, where they met East top-seed Kalani, and punched its ticket to next week's state tournament on Maui.

"It gives them the confidence that we can compete and even though we had a losing record, they know what they can do," Abreu said. "We went from almost missing the playoffs to making the semis, so they know they can compete and they have confidence finally realizing that they can do it."

Russell, who bats third in the order, went 2 for 2 with a walk and an RBI in Friday's 3-2 loss to the Falcons in extra innings. He flashed some power with a leadoff triple off the fence in the right field — some 380 feet away — in the third inning.

"He's got some pop in that bat," said Abreu, who noted that Russell works with former longtime Kamehameha coach Vern Ramie at his 808 Baseball Academy on his swing. "He kind of struggled in the beginning of the year but he's been working with coach Vern to reinforce his hitting and ever since then he's made some small adjustments and he's been hitting the ball well."

Russell, who is batting .356 on the season, wrapped up his week with a 2-for-3 day at the dish with two doubles and a run scored in Saturday's third-place game against Pearl City.

Abreu has been with Russell since 2014 — his first year as varsity coach at his alma mater. Russell, who has started at shortstop since his freshman year, is verbally committed to the University of Hawaii.

"He had all the tools as a freshman," Abreu said. "He had a strong arm and could hit with power, so we wanted him to grow with us. We had a good senior class that year and the seniors took him under their wing and just let him play. He went through some growing pains as a freshman starting at the varsity level, but he handled his own."

With its strong showing in the OIA tournament, Waipahu moved into the ScoringLive/Hawaiian Electric Power Rankings for the first time this season. The eighth-ranked Marauders (5-11) will be the OIA's fourth seed in the state tournament, which is being held at Iron Maehara Stadium in Maui this year.

Female Athlete of the Week: Madison Moku, Hawaii Baptist track and field
Madison Moku set herself up for an enjoyable weekend.

The Hawaii Baptist Academy sophomore sprinter turned in her best meet of the track and field season at Friday night's Interscholastic League of Honolulu championships at Kamehameha's Kunuiakea Stadium.

Moku won all four of her events: the 100-, 200- and 400-meter dashes as well as the 100-meter hurdles.

"She was just spectacular," HBA coach Aaron Kondo said. "Being able to do four races (at Wednesday's trials) and then again four races (at Friday's finals) in a span of three days is just amazing that she can do that."

Moku started off her night Friday with the 100-meter hurdles, which she won in a time of 16.55 seconds. A couple of events later, she turned in a mark of 13.03 seconds to claim the 100-meter dash.

Then came the surprise: Moku ran a personal best of 58.55 seconds to finish nearly one and a half seconds ahead of her nearest competitor in the 400-meter dash, an event she had not won all year in the ILH.

"It was pretty surprising," Kondo said. "She's always been a pretty strong athlete, but she was nervous about the race, so my advice was to just go out there and run your hardest because I know that giving her best will put her in contention to win."

Finally, Moku won the 200-meter dash in a time of 26.48 seconds in her final event of the meet. She successfully defended her ILH title in the 100, 200 and 400. It was her first season competing in the hurdles.

"She's always competitive and wanting to do more and wanting to get better," Kondo said.

Kondo said Moku worked diligently throughout the season to improve her stamina for the 400-meter dash.

"A lot of the focus was on her speed work early in the year and making sure that was down, but later in the season for the 400 races we started incorporating things so she can push through the last 100 meters of the race," Kondo said. "That's what she was struggling with early on — not being able to push through — and then she came through in the ILH championships and she ran a great time. She looked really strong finishing in that 400 race."

As a freshman last year, Madison placed fifth in the 100, third in the 200 and sixth in the 400 at the state championships on Maui.

"She does everything we ask of her pretty much as well as we could ask for," Kondo. "She works pretty much year-round to be in shape and to get faster. She does more than what we require of her. Before the season started she would usually work out with her brother and dad, doing strengthening things and plyometrics — things that you can't get done in the middle of the season — so she's always working."

While her work ethic has been superlative, Moku's lineage certainly doesn't hurt either. Her father, Sam, is a former football standout at Damien and the University of Hawaii and guided Kamehameha to three boys track and field state championships and five ILH titles during his 15 years as Warriors' coach.

"It's helped having him there and then being able to use his knowledge of track and field," Kondo said.

Kondo feels that Madison is more than capable of competing collegiately.

"Hopefully at the Division I likely, which I think is most likely," Kondo said. "It's kind of incredible what she's doing already, (but) I think pretty much she can be as good as she wants to be."

The ILH will hold a last-chance qualifier meet Friday at Kamehameha, which is also the site of the Island Movers/Hawaii High School Athletic Association State Championships the following week.
