With Campbell's loss in Thursday's Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I quarterfinals to Kailua, the Sabers' three-year reign on the league championship has ended.
East top seed Kalani will play West sixth seed Waipahu, 3:30 p.m. Friday in one semifinal at Hans L'Orange Park. In the nighcap, East second seed Kailua will meet West top seed Pearl City.
Kailua and Pearl City have most recently advanced to OIA title games. Kailua lost to Campbell in 2014 and is looking for its first crown since 2012. Pearl City last advanced to the title game in 2011 before falling to Moanalua. The Chargers are seeking their first crown since 2010.
But when it comes to Waipahu and Kalani, you need to go back a little. Waipahu's last title came in 1985 and Kalani's in 1971, a year after the Falcons won the Interscholastic League of Honolulu and state championship. When the 1970-71 school year started, public schools from the ILH merged with the modern-day OIA.
Waipahu's last title-game appearance was 1999, when it was led by pitcher Jerome Williams. Williams beat Roosevelt, 3-2, in the semifinals when he struck out 20 in seven innings. But Waipahu lost to Pearl City in the title game.
