Top Performers
Iolani's Lau, KS-Hawaii's Tokunaga lead top performers

Male Athlete of the Week: Everett Lau, Iolani baseball
One of the bright spots this season for the Iolani baseball team has been the play of Everett Lau.

Lau, the Raiders' senior third baseman is sporting a healthy .469 batting average with 10 doubles and three home runs — all league-leading marks. He turned in another standout performance at the plate Thursday in a do-or-die game.

In the 7-4 win over Kamehameha, Lau batted 3 for 3 and was a home run shy of hitting for the cycle.

"He's just got a natural ability," Iolani coach Kurt Miyahira said. "He can run, he can throw, he can obviously hit. I'm glad he's doing well."

Lau reached base in all four of his plate appearances. He fouled off three two-strike pitches before sending a ground ball into left field for a first-inning single in his first at-bat. In the fourth inning, he lined the first pitch he saw to the power alley in left center. He moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Landon Moran and scored on Kaimana Bartolome's single one batter later.

"That was probably the best manufactured run we've had all year," said Miyahira, who added that he was pleased to see Lau attack a pitch early in the count. "That's almost his nature not to be aggressive. I used to get on him to swing early because he'll take a pitch here and a pitch there, but he's not afraid to get two strikes on him. It's a quiet confidence that he has that makes him good in those situations."

After the Warriors scored four runs in the bottom of the inning, Iolani got one back in the sixth when Lau got on with a two-out triple and scored on a wild pitch.

It set-up the Raiders' game-winning seventh-inning rally, when they sent 10 batters to the plate and scored five runs on four singles. They were aided by two walks issued by Kamehameha pitching in the inning. Lau, who was hit by a pitch in his last plate appearance, scored the final run of the inning.

Miyahira was Lau's coach at the junior varsity level two years ago and was reunited with him this year, his first as the Raiders varsity coach.

"He's a funny kid; For April Fool's (Day) he decided to tie a can to the back of my car with a fishing line," Miyahira said. "He's always keeping everybody loose, he doesn't take everything too seriously and he never gets too high or too low. He's an easy-going guy and he's really likable."

That's not to say that Lau is a jokester all the time.

"He's a competitor and it helps him that he's athletic," Miyahira said. "His biggest strength is that he has the ability to slow the game down. The game is never too fast for him. He has a good mental clock in his head."

Miyahira praised Lau and the eight other seniors for their resiliency during some up and downs this season.

"We put a lot of pressure on them because they're at the forefront of the culture change so it's almost unfair for them to have a new coach again," Miyahira said. "Some of them have had a new coach every year since the seventh grade, so it's hard for them to trust anybody and I don't blame them. All of these seniors have been on this ride together and I'm so proud of them. They're all great kids and they do it for each other."

The win over Kamehameha assured the Raiders of at least two more games. They were relegated to the loser's bracket of the ILH second round with Saturday's 4-1 loss to top-seeded Mid-Pacific, but staved off elimination with a 6-4 win over Saint Louis Tuesday afternoon.

Lau batted 2 for 3 with a pair of doubles, an RBI and a run scored against the Crusaders.

Iolani (6-12) will face Mid-Pacific (13-4) in another elimination game Friday afternoon.

Female Athlete of the Week: Mykala Tokunaga, Kamehameha-Hawaii softball
It didn't take Gary Ahu long to realize Mykala Tokunaga was going to be a special player.

The Kamehameha-Hawaii softball coach can recall his early impression of Tokunaga as a freshman four years ago.

"She was already a good player," Ahu said of Tokunaga, the Warriors' ace pitcher and a four-year starter. "I never really expected that she was a good pitcher at that level, so when she came in and started pitching, I knew that she was kind of dominant compared to the pitchers at the other schools in our league."

Ahu was so impressed by Tokunaga that he selected her as a team captain in her freshman season.

"She's been a four-year captain and she's a good leader," Ahu said. "All four years she's done a great job for us. If we never had her it would be touch and go every game."

Not only has Tokunaga been a mainstay in the pitching circle, she has been a fixture at the clean-up spot in the Warriors' batting order all four seasons as well.

"She never did let me down there," Ahu said, noting that Tokunaga can also play first base and outfield when not pitching.

Tokunaga, who is signed with Sonoma State University, has certainly done her part this season. She has a .560 batting average and is tied (with her teammate Makena Wagner) for the state lead in hits with 28. She has also driven in 24 runs and scored 25 runs on the year. Meanwhile, she is 12-0 with a 1.71 ERA as a pitcher. Tokunaga has allowed 40 hits in 63 1/3 innings pitched and has notched 80 strikeouts against 20 walks.

"She's improved a little bit on the velocity over the years, but her mental mind is stronger — plus her hitting is exceptional," Ahu said. "Every year she's improved."

Ahu added that over the summer, Tokunaga trains with former Chaminade coach and current Mililani High assistant Walter Kaaihili.

Tokunaga made a rare relief appearance in a 13-6 win over Konawaena Thursday. She struck out five, walked none and surrendered just one hit in 4 2/3 scoreless innings of work to help the Warriors rally from an early deficit.

"She did a great job," Ahu said of Tokunaga, who also batted 2 for 3 with a solo home run against the Wildcats.

Two days later, Tokunaga went 2 for 4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored in a 16-2 win over Konawaena. She struck out five and allowed two hits in the five-inning victory.

The win clinched the best-of-three semifinal series for Kamehameha-Hawaii, which will face Kohala in the Division II championship series of the Big Island Interscholastic Federation this weekend.

The Warriors posted their best finish at the state tournament by winning the third-place game last year. Tokunaga, along with fellow Warriors Kekai Wong-Yuen, Taylor Sullivan and Kiarra Lincoln earned Second Team All-Hawaii honors.

"My four captains are my core players and three of them are seniors," Ahu said of Tokunaga, Wong-Yuen and Wagner (Lincoln is a junior). "Last year they decided that their goal was to play in the championship game in states. I think the goal this year is to try and do the same, but to try and be humble. I don't want them to be overconfident; that's the part I try to emphasize."

Tokunaga and the Warriors can clinch their fifth consecutive BIIF title this weekend and a spot in next month's DataHouse/Hawaii High School Athletic Association State Championships with two wins over Kohala Friday and Saturday.
