KAILUA — Keiki Kanehele-Santos and Matthew Hanano combined to pitch six innings of shutout ball to help Kailua defeat visiting Kaiser, 4-2 in both team's regular season finale.

The Surfriders totaled eight hits and jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first inning to notch their seventh straight win and improve to 9-3 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I Eastern Division.

Kailua, who is ranked tenth in the Hawaiian Electric/ScoringLive Baseball Power Rankings, will enjoy a first round bye in the league's upcoming 12-team playoffs.

"The bond that we have is ridiculous," said Kanehele-Santos, who gave up just one hit in three innings. "I feel confident out there with everybody and everybody feels confident with each other."

Kaiser dropped to 5-7 and will face Aiea, the fourth-seeded team from the OIA Division I West, in the first round of the OIA tournament.

Hanano, who started the game in left field, tossed two strikeouts and also allowed a single hit in his three innings of work.

"They threw strikes and that's all that we need them told do. Just throw strikes and let our defense work and they both did that," Kailua coach Corey Ishigo said on Kanehele-Santos and Hanano.

The one guy who was a thorn in the side to the Surfriders' pitchers was Kaiser catcher Emmett Covello, who batted 3 for 3 and scored in the top of the seventh when Kailua's Cody Takabuki took the mound.

After leadoff hitter Dustin Imanaka struck out to begin the bottom of the first, designated hitter Dalton Kalama singled and three-hole Noah Auld reached on an error. Second baseman Lawson Faria fouled out before Kanehele-Santos' two-out line drive to left field plated Kalama for the first score of the game.

"That was pretty good because it took a weight off my shoulder," said Kanehele-Santos. "Nothing was in my head at that time, I was just going with the flow."

Hanano doubled to centerfield to score Auld before the inning was over to give the Surfriders a 2-0 lead.

"Defensively I think we were just a little flat-footed (in the first inning)," said Covello.

When the rotation reverted back to the top of the lineup, Imanaka delivered a hit that went straight to the lower leg of Kaiser starter Jace Kaito. Imanaka would later score on a single from Auld two batters later to make it 3-0 in favor of the home team.

"It was big for us to get on the board early," said Ishigo.

Awa Byers scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth for the Surfiders' final run of the game.

The Cougars managed to score two runs in the top of the seventh thanks to back-to-back hits by Kainoa Torres and Covello. A balk by Takabuki would score Torres and a two-out double by from Kainoa Craig brought in Covello for the final run of the game.
