Kapolei boys, Roosevelt girls win OIA judo team championships

Reigning state champions Kapolei and Roosevelt captured the boys and girls titles, respectively, at the Oahu Interscholastic Association judo team championships at Moanalua Friday night.

The West top-seeded Hurricanes defeated Mililani, 77-10, in the boys final. They had 10-point (ippon) winners in Jayson Pagurayan (121 pounds), Anthony Brett (132), Rodman Salangdron (161), Kaulana Narcisco (178), Aaron Sotoa (198), Kaulana Stanley (220) and Johnny Morrison (285) to capture their third consecutive league crown.

Kapolei defeated Moanalua, 80-15, in the quarterfinal round before narrowly edging Kalani via tiebreaker in the semifinal round. The Falcons held a 30-0 lead in the match, but the Hurricanes rallied to tie it at 50-all after all 10 matches in regulation. The teams went to a best-of-three tiebreaker, where twin brothers Andre (114 pounds) and Jayson Pagurayan (121) sealed the comeback with wins by ippon in the first two matches.

Mililani was an unlikely finalist opposite of Kapolei. It was the fourth seed out of the Western Division and posted upsets over East top-seed McKinley and West No. 2 seed Pearl City en route to the championship bout.

Meanwhile, the Rough Riders went down to the wire in their 50-44 win over six-time defending champion Pearl City in the girls' final.

Ten-point winners for Roosevelt were Macy Higa (115 pounds), Rhea Quezon (129) and Kaylah Samia (220). Pearl City got ippons from Netanya Kang (122 pounds) and Sarah Kaaiakamanu (139).

It is the first team title for the Rough Riders since 2009 and just the second in 21-year history of girls' judo in the OIA.

Roosevelt, the East top seed, defeated Mililani, 60-25, in the quarterfinals and topped Kapolei, 60-32, in the semifinals.

Pearl City's road to the final included a 70-30 quarterfinal win over McKinley and a 57-40 semifinal win over Moanalua.

The Eastern and Western divisional championships will be held at McKinley and Pearl City, respectively, next Saturday.
