KS-Hawaii has flexibility in lineup

Kamehameha-Hawaii boys volleyball coach Guy Enriques has a dilemma that professional teams usually face.

Go all in for a championship this year, or build for the future.

Fans of the Warriors will have noticed that the team has used a range of setters throughout the season. Enriques' plans to use a 6-2 lineup for the years to come, but has gone with a 5-1 rotation in some of the team's bigger matches.

In the past two years, the setting duties have fallen to Enriques' twin sons, Addison and Avery. This year Kameron Moses and Naia Makuakane are working at the spot so that Enriques twins can fill in as another outside hitter and libero.

"Our future is that we're going to run a 6-2 next year with the twins filling in on the guns," said coach Enriques. "Kameron is holding his own, but he's still a rookie at that position. That line up is solid, but it's a little inconsistent."

As Moses and Makuakane get more reps in, the Warriors will have Addison set when they play top level competition, as they did in Punahou's annual Clash of the Titans tournament. KS-Hawaii drop both matches, but was able to take a set from Mira Costa and Corono Del Mar.

Those that follow the volleyball competition closely will also notice that KS-Hawaii's main offensive weapon isn't an Enriques. Without Evan and Emmett Enriques now off on the college level, the mantle has now fallen to Isaiah Laeha.

"Isaiah is doing a great job," said coach Enriques. "He doesn't do any offseason club, and for what he does for us, it's phenomenal. It's just a matter of consistency from set to set, play to play, night to night.

"It's not a role he's used to, but he's capable of it. I think if he can find his way through the rough spots, he's going to be the guy (and) the twins are doing a great job in backing him up."

Injuries have also taken its toll on the team as the Warriors were without 6-foot-3 sophomore middle Sam Kahapea when they came for the Punahou tourney. His presence was missed as Corono Del Mar's 6-foot-7 Jake Meyer was able to pound out 15 kills over the block in three sets.

With Kahapea sidelined, opposite hitter Pukana Vincent has had to fill in the middle spot. Although he didn't see much swings, he was an effective decoy for Laeha in a crossing attack.

"They audible that on their own," said coach Enriques. "That's a nice thing about the twins and those guys out there. We don't practice that. My instruction is if it's working, I'm not going to say anything."

In order to overcome their lack of height, the Warriors will still dink and dunk and rely on tips and rolls to combat taller teams.

"Bigger teams don't cover the off-speed (attacks) as well so we have to mix it up," said coach Enriques.

Avery had a double-double of 20 kills and 12 digs and Laeha added 15 more to lead KS-Hawaii in the loss to Corono Del Mar.
