Finalists announced for annual Newcomer award




ScoringLive is proud to announce this year's finalists for the Pizza Hut Newcomer Award, with the overall winners to be recognized at the Distinguished Athlete Awards banquet on May 22.

Male finalists are:

Austin Ewing, Konawaena, 10 (Football)
Ewing helped guide the Wildcats to a league title and Division II state football semifinal appearance, passing for division-leading 2,290 yards and 31 touchdowns. He was named BIIF Division II Player of the Year and was also a first team Division II All-Hawaii selection.

Jeremy McGoldrick, Castle, 11 (Football)
McGoldrick, an OIA Red Division first team selection at wide reciever and second team Division I All-Hawaii utllity caught 44 passes for 710 yards in 2015. His 15 toudchdown receptions ranked third amongst all Division I receivers.

Kameron Ng, Saint Francis, 9 (Boys Basketball)
Ng averaged 11.3 points per game and knocked down 25 three-pointers in league play to help the Saints win the ILH Division II title with a 11-1 record in league play.

Makana Srivongsana, Kaiser, 9 (Boys Soccer)
Srivongsana scored 27 goals for the Cougars in 2016, good for third best in all of Division I boys soccer. He was a first team All-Hawaii and OIA selection at forward.

Taulia Tagovailoa, Kapolei, 9 (Football)
Tagovailoa was second amongst all Division I players in passing yardage with 2,781 amassed in 2015, to go along with 22 touchdowns. He was an OIA Blue Division and Division I All-Hawaii honorable mention selection at quarterback.

Max Weimken, Hawaii Baptist, 9 (Boys Basketball)
Weimken averaged 11.1 points per game in ILH play and hit 22 three-pointers, which included a season-high 22 point game against Saint Francis.

Female finalists are:

Lexis Akeo, Kamehameha, 9 (Girls Volleyball)
Akeo was a second team ILH all-star selection at setter and recorded 42 assists and 22 digs in the Division I state championship match to help the Warriors claim the title over Iolani.

Kelani Corbett, Leilehua, 9 (Wrestling)
Corbett claimed the 155 pound title as a freshman at the HHSAA Wrestling State Championships.

Kimani Fernandez-Roy, Kamehameha-Maui, 10 (Girls Basketball)
Fernandez-Roy averaged 8.8 points per game in league play, helping the Warriors earn their first Division I state tournament appearance.

Sunshine Fontes, Pearl City, 9 (Girls Soccer)
Fontes was a pivotal cog in the Chargers' run to a state title, led all Division I players with 29 goals scored on the year, was a first team All-Hawaii and OIA selection, and also an all-tournament selection.

Ashley Gooman, Kamehameha, 9 (Wrestling)
Gooman claimed the 102 pound title as a freshman at the HHSAA Wrestling State Championships.

Maile Kuia, Baldwin, 9 (Girls Soccer)
Kuia was a force in goal for the Bears all season, where she earned all-tournament, league and All-Hawaii honors.

The Pizza Hut Newcomer is awarded for superior performance by a male and female student-athlete participating in their first full year of play in varsity athletics.

Freshmen, as well as any players who have not yet played in a regular-season league contest are eligible.
