KALIHI—Led by Micha Maiava, Kahuku (5-1) swept Farrington (2-5), 25-20, 25-18 in an Oahu Interscholastic Association East Division game at Kitamura Gymnasium on Tuesday night.

Maiava led the Red Raiders with 11 kills and had four service aces. Cameron Renaud dished out 11 assists and Alaifatu Tito had 12 digs.

"Tonight I did alright, our team usually communicates better. Yesterday at practice, our focus was our passes so we can run our offense," said Maiava.

"Micah is our go-to guy, if we need him to set or block or hit, he's going to do it for us," said Kahuku coach Kaniela Kalama. "We worked in practice to use everyone so the other side has to think a little more on what to do."

The Govs kept it close in the beginning until the Red Raiders started pulling away. Caleb Alexander had a kill to put Kahuku up, 19-15 prompting Farrington to call a timeout. Maiava had back-to-back kills and had another one to clinch the first set.

Elia Mose led the Govs with seven kills and Joziah Anakalea had 15 digs.

Serving was an issue for both teams as they combined for 17 service errors.

"It's a constant battle with serving," said Kalama.

On the contrary, Maiava had three service aces to give the Red Raiders the momentum to help them pull away. They extended the lead to 10, 17-7. However, the momentum started to shift Farrington's way and they went on a 7-1 run to bring it within three, 21-18 and Kahuku called a timeout. The Red Raiders responded after the timeout with a 4-0 run to complete the sweep and claim the match.

"We talked about mental stuff and attitude. They did what I asked them to do. Switch it up and let Micah set again. I know Micah likes to hit, but he can do all of it," said Kalama.

Kahuku will host Kalaheo on Mar. 31 while Farrington will play at Kalani on the same night.
