Mid-Pacific's Oley, Roosevelt's Foster collect weekly honor

Male Athlete of the Week: Alex Oley, Mid-Pacific baseball
No one was happier for Alex Oley than his coach, Dunn Muramaru.

Oley, a senior left-handed pitcher for the Mid-Pacific baseball team, had a game to remember Saturday in a 2-0 win over then-No. 1 Saint Louis. He tossed a complete game one-hitter on the mound and was a perfect 3 for 3 at the plate as well.

"He was just excellent. He did an excellent job," Muramaru said of the 5-foot-9 Oley. "It was so easy to coach because I didn't have to worry about the defense; We just had to figure out a way to score a couple of runs the way he was pitching."

Oley faced the minimum 21 batters with two strikeouts. The only hit he allowed — a first-inning double — was negated by an over-the-shoulder catch by shortstop Jacob Maekawa, who then threw to second to double off the courtesy runner. Oley then worked a perfect final six innings.

"I think at the most he threw 60 to 70 pitches maybe. Somebody said he threw a lot of first-pitch strikes," said Muramaru, who noted that Oley was recovering from an injury to his right (non-throwing) shoulder the previous week.

"He stole home and slid and hurt his shoulder and that's why he hasn't been pitching for a while," Muramaru said. "He didn't pitch against Kamehameha or Maryknoll, so pretty good for a guy coming off injury."

Of course, Oley is well-accustomed to pitching in big games. He was the starting pitcher in last year's Division I state championship game, which MPI lost to Campbell in extra innings, 3-2.

Oley, who bats in the second spot in the lineup for the Owls and plays centerfield when he's not pitching, has also made great strides at the plate since last season.

"He's gotten to be a better hitter," Muramaru said. "He makes better contact this year and has improved all the rest of his game and just gotten better overall. He's a better hitter now than he was last year and he's much stronger. He's one of those guys that I don't know why no (colleges) are after him."

Muramaru said that Oley is about as unassuming as they come.

"His arm slot is lower so I guess the ball has a lot of movement, but he's a competitor — I think that's the one thing you can't really measure about him," Muramaru said. "You might not see it in the way he acts. If he wears his glasses and walks around school nobody would even know he's a great athlete."

Oley will even walk to and from practice occasionally from his McCully home.

"He's that kind of kid," Muramaru said. "He and Chase Wago are just a low-maintenance guys. He's always one of the first guys there, he's one of the best players, he works the hardest and he does all the stuff he's supposed to do. I guess he's the coach's dream. A lot of times the kids that don't play a lot do the field work after the games, but he plays a lot and he does the work and doesn't complain. If you didn't know he was a star, you wouldn't ever know. He's just a good kid. I think any coach in the whole state would love to have him."

Oley has hit in eight of the Owls' 10 games this season and has a .452 batting average. He has a 2.88 ERA in 17.0 innings pitched on the mound.

"He deserves everything he gets," Muramaru said. "He's one of those guys that works really hard. Ever since he came here as a ninth-grader, he's always one of the guys in the batting cages and just working really hard."

Mid-Pacific has won four straight games and six of its last seven and moved up two spots to No. 2 in this week's ScoringLive/Hawaiian Electric Baseball Power Rankings.

Oley and the Owls will face Saint Louis again Wednesday at Goeas Field in Hawaii Kai before a Friday-night showdown against Punahou at Hans L'Orange this week.

Female Athlete of the Week: Mari Foster, Roosevelt softball
Mari Foster had to work a little overtime Saturday for the Roosevelt softball team.

The sophomore pitcher went the distance, scattering four hits over eight scoreless innings in the Rough Riders' 1-0 win over visiting Castle. Foster had one strikeout against two walks and batted 2 for 4 at the plate.

"She did well," Roosevelt coach Clay Okamura said. "Right now she's still learning a lot so it's not that she's overpowering or crafty like a veteran, but she does what she's asked to do and that's all we can ask of her."

Foster split time in the circle as a freshman last year, but has taken over the role of ace this season.

"She's still learning and getting better," Okamura said of Foster, who also plays volleyball in the fall and basketball in the winter seasons. "We're a young team. They do well and (Foster), I think she knows her role and she trusts her defense."

The Rough Riders have rode Foster's arm to a 5-1 record and second place in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I East at the midway point of the regular season. They have won four straight games since a one-run loss to division-leading Kaiser and are ranked 10th in the ScoringLive/Hawaiian Electric Softball Power Rankings.

The Cougars roughed up Foster to the tune of six runs — two of them unearned — on 10 hits back on March 11, but she kept her team in the game with a 2-for-4 day at the plate, including a home run and four runs batted in.

"She can hit the long ball and she makes solid contact and she can run, so she's in the fourth spot, but it's almost like having another third batter," Okamura said Foster, who did bat third in the lineup last year. "It's pretty much the same approach she took last year, it's kind of just that she's a year older so a year better and a year more mature."

In her next outing following the 6-5 loss to Kaiser, Foster against went the distance and allowed two runs on seven hits in an 8-2 win over Moanalua. She helped her own cause by batting 2 for 4 with a home run, triple, three RBI and three runs scored.

Foster scored five runs in a 32-5 rout of McKinley four days later. Through it all, she has led by example, Okamura said.

"She's not loud, but she's not really quiet either; she's just one of the girls," he said.

Okamura first met Foster when she became a manager for his team as an eighth-grader in 2014.

"One of the other girls — Mika Emoto — her mom asked if they could come out and work out with the kids," Okamura recalled. "They started out in the weight room and it's just carried over onto the field."

Foster, who has also seen time at both shortstop and first base in her two seasons with the team, is also a diligent worker in the classroom.

"She's a smart girl," Okamura said. "She has (Advanced Placement) or honors classes."

Foster and the Rough Riders visit Kaimuki Saturday before a rematch against Kaiser next Thursday.
