Top Performers
Kalani's Zalewski, Kamehameha's Millwood lead top performers

Male Athlete of the Week: Connor Zalewski, Kalani baseball
Connor Zalewski has been a welcomed addition to say the least for the Kalani baseball team.

The senior pitcher and transfer from Mid-Pacific is 2-0 on the season with a 1.33 earned run average. Zalewski turned in another solid performance Wednesday in a 5-2 win over Kaiser. He went the distance and allowed two runs on six hits with six strikeouts against one walk.

"I think that was his best outing as far as not throwing too many pitches," Kalani coach Shannon Hirai said.

Zalewski, a 6-foot-3 right-hander threw 61 of his 89 pitches for strikes and recorded 10 ground-ball outs to three fly-ball outs.

"He didn't try to strikeout everybody; it was more of him going in believing in his defense and going after hitters and I think that contributed to some real quick innings and then, of course, his pitch count went really down," Hirai said.

Zalewski has gone seven innings in all three of his starts this season. In his first two outings — wins over Moanalua and Kailua — he registered seven strikeouts, but also walked four batters both times. Against Kaiser Wednesday he threw first-pitch strikes to 15 of the 29 hitters he faced. His only walk issued came to leadoff the top of the seventh, but he struck out two of the final three Cougars to end the game.

"I think the hard thing for hitters facing him is he throws a lot of pitches and he throws them around the plate so you can't really dig in on anything," Hirai said. "Against Kaiser I noticed that he used the change-up a little more. In past games he was using a curve or a cutter more, but I think he adapts well to whatever the umpire is giving up and the team we're playing."

For the season, Zalewski has 20 strikeouts to nine walks allowed. He has given up just four runs on 13 hits in 21.0 innings. The numbers are somewhat surprising given the fact that he had not pitched for more than a year due to a nagging elbow injury.

"I think in the beginning Connor kind of felt like he had to do everything," Hirai said. "I guess coming in as a high-profile guy and wanting to prove that to his new teammates there was a lot of pressure and him not being able to throw for a year because of his injury as well, so a lot of it is new to him and I think he's continuing to grow with each start."

Hirai said some of the Falcons were already familiar with Zalewski having played together on previous outside league teams, which helped with the transition for both parties.

"I think the biggest relationship that has really come about is with Connor and (senior outfielder) Payton Awaya and (senior utility) Reece Kakugawa," Hirai said. "The three of them have really come together in leading this team. Reece and Payton has really kind of taken him under their wing at school."

The transition on the field has gone smoothly as well for Zalewski, who bats clean-up and has a healthy .400 batting average.

"We weren't sure as far as his hitting where he would end up, but he kind of settled in there," Hirai said. "He's a gamer. He's kind of has just done it by example and he's super competitive and he comes from a winning program so he's been a tremendous addition for us."

Kalani is off to a 5-0 start and in first place atop the standings in the Oahu Interscholastic Association's Division I East.

"It's so competitive in our division," Hirai said. "All of our games have been decided in the last two or three innings and that gives us a whole bunch of confidence knowing that we can play in those tight games. Now we have to learn that everybody is going to try to knock us off and try to deal with that, whereas we were kind of the underdogs in the first round."

Zalewski and the Falcons visit Castle Wednesday. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.

Female Athlete of the Week: Dallas Millwood, Kamehameha softball
Dallas Millwood is a believer that father — err, coach — knows best.

The Kamehameha sophomore has been on a tear with the bat in her hands this season. Millwood, who leads the team in every major offensive category, was key once again Saturday in the Warriors' come-from-behind 8-4 win over previously-unbeaten Maryknoll.

Millwood, a 5-foot-10 first baseman, belted a two-run home run in the top of the fifth inning against the Spartans.

In a 17-7 win over Saint Francis Wednesday, she went 3 for 4 with a home run, five RBI and two runs scored.

"I guess I have enough confidence in her that what she's doing now is what she's capable of playing all the time," said Warriors' coach James Millwood, Dallas' father. "I'm happy for her and I'm proud of her that she's been able to step it up and hit the ball the way she's been hitting. Hopefully she stays hot like this and also plays solid defense at first for us."

The elder Millwood said Dallas made an adjustment after a previous at-bat Saturday.

"In her second at-bat she ended up popping up but before that she drilled one over the right field fence but just foul, so she ended up moving up in the (batter's) box so she wouldn't be so early," he said.

Dallas, who bats third in the potent Kamehameha lineup, also started as a freshman last year and earned Second Team All-Hawaii Division I recognition, but a year of experience has seemingly served her well so far this season.

"She had an excellent year her freshman year, but just being a freshman it's a learning experience playing at that varsity level," James Millwood said. "I think this year she's even more comfortable with her teammates and she's able to relax and be herself and play that kind of ball that she's used to playing."

James Millwood said he's worked with Dallas on her pitch selection at the plate, which has continued to improve over the course of the season.

"We talk about not trying to chase stuff that is out of the zone just because you want to hit — if they're going to walk you, just take it and let the next person get a hit for us," he said. "I think only when she tries too hard she'll chase balls that she's not supposed to, but she's been pretty good about staying within herself."

Softball is most certainly a family affair for the Millwoods. Dallas' older sister Jordan is a senior second baseman on the team and another sister, Jamie, also played at Kamehameha before going on to college ball at Stanford.

"Jamie, I think, is her idol and Dallas has always looked up to and respected Jamie growing up," James Millwood said. "I think her being the youngest (of four daughters) she was able to learn. Even when she was young she was able to stick by me and tell me that ‘that girl should have thrown the ball there,' or 'that girl should have done that,' so she's always been very smart and on top of it as far as understanding the game. She's always been around the field and watching games when her older sisters were playing and I think that's helped her be the player she is now."

The family has learned to differentiate between softball time and family time over the years.

"Both of my daughters call me ‘coach' at practice," James Millwood said. "They don't call me ‘dad,' and I just told them when I took over last year that their play was going to have to speak for themselves and that they were going to have to earn whatever they get and I think that the players saw that they deserved to be in and they both did whatever they needed to do that's best for the team."

Kamehameha is in first place in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I standings at 4-0 and moved up two spots to No. 3 in this week's ScoringLive/Hawaiian Electric Power Rankings.
