Male Athlete of the Week: Makoa Andres, Waiakea baseball
There were no first-game jitters for Makoa Andres Thursday.

The Waiakea junior threw a complete-game no-hitter and was one walk away from a perfect game in an 11-0 win over Hilo.

Andres, a 5-foot-11 right-hander, threw just 84 pitches — 62 for strikes — and struck out eight Vikings. He recorded seven flyouts and six groundouts and threw first-pitch strikes to 15 of the 22 batters he faced.

"Makoa kept his pitches down, he kept them off-balanced, did his job as a pitcher and offensively we took advantage of a Hilo error here, another error there and the score came out what it is," Waiakea second-year coach Rory Inouye said.

Hilo committed four errors and used four different pitchers in the game.

"We played a good game, (but) I know next time it won't be that kind of a score," Inouye cautioned. "Hilo will be back and they will want redemption. For us, it's about just going out there and playing the best that we can."

Inouye praised Andres — his staff ace since last year — for his aggressiveness in "attacking hitters," but also complimented his patience on the mound Thursday.

"We really liked how he really controlled the game's tempo," Inouye said. "He slowed down the game when Hilo High took a little bit of the momentum. He slowed it down to his tempo and for us, that shows his maturity as a pitcher so we were really happy with that."

Andres has a fastball and a breaking ball in his repertoire and is in the process of adding an off-speed pitch.

"He has a good fastball that he locates well and, it looks like a slider but he calls it a hard curveball — he throws that pretty good. We're working on a third pitch change-up," Inouye said. "He threw one about 30 feet from the plate and didn't want to throw it again, but he's just got to do it in bullpen and in practice and by the end of the year hopefully he's comfortable with all three pitches."

That could make for quite the scary proposition for opposing lineups this spring.

"Makoa is one of those pitchers who, whenever he gets the ball, he has the potential to do something like a no-hitter and knowing that, we always try to tell him that ‘Don't be happy with that. Work harder, get better. there's always going to be someone better out there,' " Inouye said.

Andres did not play in the team's season opener on Feb. 27, so Thursday's game against the crosstown rival under the lights of Wong Stadium was his 2016 debut. He batted fifth and had a pair of base hits, including a second-inning double to left field.

"He has power potential," Inouye said. "He's one of the free-swinging power hitters for us. He can start a rally and he's one of those guys we look to when guys are on base in front of him."

Last year was Andres' first full varsity season, but it didn't take long for Inouye to recognize that he would make an immediate impact.

"He really started to open some eyes last year," said Inouye, a 2007 Waiakea graduate who has coached at his alma mater since 2012. "This year he knew that he was going to be the workhouse, he knew what he needed to do to lead this team and so far, so good. He's the guy we're giving the ball to in big games."

Andres and the Warriors (3-0) debuted at No. 9 in the first ScoringLive/Hawaiian Electric Baseball Power Rankings released Monday evening. They will play road games at Pahoa (Wednesday) and Hawaii Prep (Saturday) this week.

Female
Athlete of the Week: Iyana Reed, Moanalua softball
The prep softball season could not have started off any better for Iyana Reed and Moanalua.

The sophomore second baseman hit a leadoff home run to set the tone in Na Menehune's season-opening 12-1 at Kaimuki Saturday.

"She's actually usually not our leadoff hitter," Moanalua coach Kristie Morikawa said. "She's got a stick, so this whole time we've batter her fourth, but when we were making the lineup (Saturday) my assistant, Kate (Robinson) said "put Iyana, she's going to make contact,' and in her first at bat she hit one over and I gave Kate the stink eye and I told her, ‘we could have had runner on base."

Reed, however, was far from done. She belted a two-run homer in the second inning and ended up going 3 for 3 with a walk and three runs scored.

Morikawa credited Reed for her consistent approach at the plate — most of the time, anyway.

"I think she doesn't go up there thinking home run. she goes up there thinking base hit and a lot of times it translates to home run," Morikawa said. "Although after she hit the second one the swing changed a little and we had to remind her that we're aiming for a single."

The 5-foot-6 Reed started since last season and plays softball year round.

"She's been playing forever and she only plays softball," Morikawa said. "She is just athletic, she's strong, she's quick and she's smart. She's a quick learner and she's interested in learning; she wants to know and you can only get better when you have those kinds of intangibles."

Reed, whose mother Maryann was a multi-sport standout at Moanalua during her prep days, had a work ethic like no other, Morikawa said.

"She's got a great swing, but she works really hard at it," Morikawa said. "She works a good deal on every kind of pitch and every different kind of spin she might see. She just puts in a lot of work and that's led to a lot of progress this year. Most of the kids on our team don't know how hard she works. She comes on Sundays and she hits into a net with just her, her mom and her dog and she takes cuts."

Morikawa said part of Iyana's resiliency surely stems from her mom.

"She played a little bit of everything at Moanalua," Morikawa said of Maryann Reed. "The last sport she played was women's football. She's actually a trauma nurse at Queen's (Hospital) so she's a tough lady and she definitely rubs off on Iyana. Iyana doesn't complain, she works hard and she does what she has to do."

Despite her youth, Reed will be among those players looked to lead this season.

"We were lucky we graduated only three players last year and none of them were starters, so it seems like this bunch has been here forever, but I forget sometimes they're only sophomores," said Morikawa, who added that she's worked with Reed on how to handle failure in stride, as well.

"Last year when she came in she would have flashes of greatness and we told her that she ‘still had years left here, so any success you have this year just take it and run with it and the low points just put it behind you," Morikawa said. "Last week (in a preseason tournament) on Maui she had a rough stretch and struggled against some pitching but she snapped out of it quickly. We try to remind her that it's just a numbers game and that most of time you're going to be unsuccessful in this game."

Reed and Na Menehune (1-0) take the field Tuesday afternoon in a home game against Castle.
