Depth has been the difference for Buffanblu

The more, the merrier has been a recipe for success for the fourth-ranked Punahou boys basketball team.

The Buffanblu reeled off their fourth consecutive win in the ultra competitive Interscholastic League of Honolulu's Division I race with a 56-41 win over Maryknoll Tuesday night.

It also marked the fourth straight game that all 15 players on its roster got in the game — which isn't by coincidence, Punahou coach Darren Matsuda said.

"The funny thing is we always play all 15 guys in in the preseason and we went 15-2 and this team is a really special team," Matsuda said. "They really like each other, they play for each other and when we went on our three-game losing streak we didn't play everybody and we, as a team, decided to play everybody because we are all young and everybody can contribute.

Sophomore point guard Cole Arceneaux said the decision stemmed from a players' only meeting following a 20-point loss to Saint Louis on Jan. 20.

"We trust everyone down to the freshmen, to the sophomores, to the juniors, even to the seniors; we all have trust in each other," said Arceneaux, who scored a game-high 12 points Tuesday night. "When we lost those three games we were playing 10 deep, eight deep, but we said that we wanted to go back to playing all 15 guys like how we did in the preseason. After that I think our confidence went up a couple of levels."

Arceneaux said many individuals sacrificed personal playing time for the greater good.

"This is a team and on a team you're going to have to make sacrifices," Arceneaux said. "Everyone wants everyone to play. It's not just a team, it's a family and that's why we win games. I think it's because we have the best bond in the state. I love these guys to death."

Matsuda applauded the selfless actions of his starters to step aside to the reserves.

"This is a special group of seniors, giving up playing time to allow the younger guys to get playing time and experience," Matsuda said. "We decided to roll with that and see what happens."

Punahou's current win streak matches the longest of the season in the rugged ILH, where all six Division I teams have been a mainstay in the Hawaiian Electric/ScoringLive Power Rankings.

"I think we are playing our best basketball right now and we can only get better, we can't go down," Arceneaux said. "We are playing as a team again and everyone is sharing the ball. If you look at the stat book, all of us go off. We don't just have one scorer; anyone can score. We just have to keep playing as a family."

The Buffanblu (20-6 overall, 5-4 ILH) have had five different leading scorers in its nine league games this year. They will look to make it five straight wins when they close out the regular season at Saint Louis Thursday night.
