KALIHI — University Lab used a 11-0 second quarter run to top Hawaii Baptist in the second regular season meeting between the teams, 76-66 at Damien's Gymnasium Monday night.

Ryan Hobus had a double-double of 24 points and 11 rebounds and Anson Canencia added 17 points to help the Jr. Bows improve to 7-2 in Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division II play.

University Lab jumped out to an early 6-0 lead 69 seconds into the contest before Hawaii Baptist's 3-point shooting made it a back-and-forth first half. The Jr. Bows made some key adjustments after the opening period and were able to go on a 11-0 run to take a 42-33 halftime lead.

Prior to University Lab's scoring streak there were 10 lead changes and two ties.

"Our goal was to play them with a zone defense but we had to switch to a man defense and I think that threw them off a little and gave us a little run in the second quarter to widen the lead," said University Lab coach Walter Quitan.

"They're a great shooting team," Quitan said on the Eagles. "We have a big lineup and it's a bit of a challenge defensively. We just had to weather the storm. The man defense helped us out and we stuck with it the rest of the way."

Tempo also contributed to the Jr. Bows' 11-0 run. Instead of trying to operate in a half court offense, University Lab played to Hawaii Baptist's pace and got handful of quick buckets off of the Eagles' missed jumpers.

"They kind of took us out of it because they were trapping up high and doubling down low really quick so we were getting more transition looks than half court looks," said Quitan.

Hobus, who shot 9-for-11 from the field, tied the game up at 31 apiece to jump start the run and Charlie Fox banked in a jumper from the elbow to give the Jr. Bows the lead for good. A triple by Canencia and another basket from Hobus made it a seven-point game and Keawe Tong's lone basket of the night capped the 11-0 run.

"We're just a young team," said Hawaii Baptist coach George Weeks. "Our older kids are also inexperienced so we're also young in that sense. Sometimes we have mental lapses and that was our mental lapse moment today. It affected the outcome of the game."

University Lab led by as many as 14 points in the third quarter and led 55-45 heading into the final period of play.

Hawaii Baptist knocked down three triples to start the fourth quarter to make it a one-point game within the first two minutes of the period. Fox was able to stop the run to give the Jr. Bows some breathing room, but the Eagles still hung around and made it a two-point game, 63-61, on Ty Minatoya's 3-point play with 3:39 left in regulation.

That would be as close as Hawaii Baptist would get as Hobus got a putback on the other end and Minatoya, who finished with 18 points on 6-for-10 shooting, fouled out with 2:53 left in the fourth quarter.

Although his team fell to 2-5 in ILH D2 play, Weeks remain upbeat with his team's performance. Reserve Max Weimken also knocked down five treys and finished with a season-high 19 points.

"Despite that mental lapse I really felt like we're getting better," he said. "Every game we play we're getting better with what we're doing. We shot the ball pretty well so we're kind of optimistic going forward."

Hawaii Baptist leading scorer Micah Mitchell, who previously scored a career-high 47 points with 13 made 3-pointers, also had a below average performance. He shot 4-for-20 from the field and finished with nine points.

"If he was hitting like he normally does it probably would have been a different story tonight," Weeks said on Mitchell.
