A tale of two halves played out Thursday night.

Zakiya Mahoney made a pair of free throws with 3.3 seconds remaining to help Bishop O'Dowd (Oakland, Calif.) complete a come-from-behind 44-42 win over Lahainaluna in the nightcap of the opening day of the Iolani Girls Prep Classic.

The Dragons trailed by as many as 16 points and never held a lead until the closing seconds.

Mahoney, who came down with a cold since arriving in Hawaii Wednesday, scored eight of her 11 points after halftime and also grabbed 12 rebounds — both team-high marks.

"I wasn't really expecting really to do too much because I'm sick, so I was just going to go out there and just play," said Mahoney, a 5-foot-9 sophomore.

Bishop O'Dowd shot an abysmal 13.6 percent (3 of 22) from the field in the first half, including a 1-of-11 mark in the first quarter.

"I told them at halftime that we couldn't have played any worst and (Lahainaluna) couldn't have played any better," Dragons coach Malik McCord said.

Fortunately, for McCord's squad, it turned the tide in its favor in the second half by turning up the defensive pressure — via a full-court press that gave the Lunas fits — and better shooting on the offensive end.

Friday’s Iolani Girls Prep Classic schedule
At Iolani School, Lower Gym
Consolation semifinals
Mililani vs. Iolani II (replacement for Punahou), 3:30 p.m.
Radford vs. Lahainaluna, 5 p.m.
Championship semifinals
Konawaena vs. South Medford, 6:30 p.m.
Iolani vs. Bishop O’Dowd, 8 p.m.

"We woke up," McCord laughed. "We changed our defense, too. We noticed they were getting tired even in the first half and we know we can go deep on our bench. We settled down offensively as well because we were just rushing too much in the beginning and we rebounded better."

Lahainaluna got 15 points from Washington State-bound wing Cameron Fernandez, who made three 3-pointers, but couldn't overcome 22 turnovers.

"I think their depth kind of wore us down, but not only that, we just too many silly turnovers and when you have 20 turnovers you're not going to win any game and that's happened," Lunas coach Todd Rickard said. "We had too many turnovers and I think a lot of those turnovers were created by ourselves."

Lahainaluna was 7-for-13 shooting from the field en route to a 16-5 lead after the first quarter and stretched it to 26-13 by halftime.

Andrada hit a 3-pointer to ignite a 9-0 Dragons run to pull them within 30-24 midway through the third quarter. They pulled even at 38-all at the 4:29 mark in the fourth quarter on Andrada's three-point play. A few possessions later, Fernandez drained an eight-foot jumper to give the Lunas a 42-40 lead.

The score held until Mahoney drew a foul in the low post to go to the free-throw line, where she made both attempts.

"It was supposed to run through Maya Pace, but I ended up being open so she passed it to me and they fouled," Maloney said.

Andrada finished with 10 points and five steals and Pace added nine points, five rebounds and five steals.

The Dragons outscored the Lunas, 31 to 16, in the second half. They were just 7 of 20 on free throws in the first half, but made all five of their attempts from the charity stripe after halftime.

"We missed 13 free throws in the first half and 10 layups and you can't win that way — and we were getting out rebounded — but the kids listened to the adjustments and they followed through so I'm really proud of them," said McCord, whose team went 25-9 en route to a Division III state championship in California last year.

Keleah Aiko Koloi had a game-high 12 rebounds with nine points and four blocks, San Jose State-bound guard Fiamea Hafoka had eight points, six rebounds and eight assists and Susitina Namoa added eight points with five boards for Lahainaluna, which will face Radford in a 5 p.m. consolation semifinal Friday.

Bishop will take on Iolani at 8 p.m. following Konawaena and South Medford (Ore.) at 6:30 p.m. in the championship semifinals.

Saturday's tournament final will be broadcasting live on ScoringLive.com. Tip off will be at approximately 8 p.m.
