Donnel Pumphrey rushed for 148 yards and three touchdowns as San Diego State defeated Hawaii 28-14 in a Mountain West Conference game at Hawaiian Airlines Field at Aloha Stadium Saturday night.
Pumphrey carried 30 times in the game and scored on runs of 34 and 8 yards in the first quarter and added a 4-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to power the Aztecs to 3-3 overall and 2-0 in the conference play.
San Diego State racked up 402 yards of total offense, including 184 through the air on 11-of-15 passing by quarterback Maxwell Smith, who threw a 58-yard touchdown pass to Eric Judge late in the second quarter.
Judge caught four passes for 92 yards and Pumphrey added two grabs for 49 yards. Chase Price carried 16 times for 60 yards.
Hawaii was held to 251 yards of total offense, including just 53 rushing. Melvin Davis rushed for 52 of them on 11 carries and scored on a 1-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter.
Quarterback Max Wittek had the only other touchdown on his 1-yard sneak midway though the third quarter. He completed 14 of 34 passes for 179 yards, but was intercepted twice late in the game.
Linebacker Julian Gener recorded a game-high 19 tackles, including 17 solo stops and Jerrol Garcia-Williams made 10 tackles for the Rainbow Warriors, who dropped their second straight game to fall to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in the Mountain West Conference.
Hawaii next plays at New Mexico Saturday.
