SALT LAKE—Vavae Malepeai rushed for 272 yards and five touchdowns to help No. 3 Mililani wallop Moanalua, 60-36 in an Oahu Interscholastic Association Blue Division finale at Moanalua on Friday night.

The senior running back averaged almost 11.3 yards per carry thanks to the blocking upfront.

"Definitely it started and ended up front. We have a lot of work to do and it's a team effort and credit to them," said Malepeai.

Both schools qualified for the OIA playoffs as Mililani clinched the division while Moanalua finished fifth. The Trojans (7-0 OIA, 7-1 overall) will get a first-round bye while the Na Menehune will play Leilehua (3-4 OIA, 3-5 overall), who finished fourth the Red Division after dropping to Kaiser.

"It's going to be a new season for everybody. We have to let the guys know they can play better on defense," said Moanalua coach Jason Cauley. "We haven't played all four quarters, but that's what we preached. It's tough to lose like this, but it's a learning lesson."

Kaysen Higa started the game finishing 11-of-19 passing for 206 yards and two touchdowns and Dillon Gabriel, who was promoted from the JV squad, went 9 of 18 for 119 yards and threw a touchdown late in the fourth to Tommy Factora.

"This is the ultimate team sport and we're heading in the right direction and we're improving. Our linemen did great," said Mililani coach Rod York. "We used the run game and the quarterbacks made the plays when we needed to."

"They are a young group of guys and they have a lot to learn, but it's fun to take the field with them. McKenzie and coach York are teaching them a lot," said Malepeai.

Higa threw his two touchdowns in the first quarter to Bryson Ventura for 26 yards and Kalakaua Timoteo, who returned from injury, for 28 yards. Timoteo caught seven passes for 92 yards to lead all Mililani receivers. Malepeai added a 55 yard touchdown and a 5-yard touchdown to give Mililani a 29-0 lead.

"They are a good team and if can't tackle them it will be a long night. That's what happened, we couldn't stop the pass or the run and when you get behind against Mililani, it's not like we can hit a little streak and come back because they are going to keep scoring," said Cauley.

Alakai Yuen threw two of his three touchdowns in the second quarter to finish the game with 248 passing yards. He threw an 82 yarder to Brandon Bender and a 46 yard touchdown to Michael Feliciano, who caught it off of a deflection. Feliciano led all receivers with 10 catches for 152 yards.

Malepeai added two more rushing touchdowns as the Trojans took a 43-14 lead going into halftime.

Ramsey Tacadena intercepted Yuen twice and Zane Pantil added another interception. After Tacadena's second interception, Malepeai broke multiple tackles and scored an 86-yard touchdown and was done for the night. Kaimana Padello recorded three sacks for the defense.

"We're improving every day and our defensive line and linebackers and we were getting better on the run stopping and forcing them into passing situations and it's easier to play defense when the run is contained," said York.

Isaiah Kuloloia went 7-for-7 for PATs and drilled a 32-yard field goal.

The Na Menehune scored 22 points in the fourth. Yuen rushed for 80 yards on 18 attempts and ran it in for a 10-yard touchdown and threw a 7-yard touchdown and a 2-point conversion to Kaimi Kini. Feliciano rushed for 74 yards for the game and scored a 1-yard touchdown.
