Top Performers
Campbell's Bunting, Pac-Five's Jones garner weekly honors

Male Athlete of the Week: Aaron Bunting, Campbell football
Aaron Bunting wasn't about to let Campbell lose its sixth straight football game Friday night.

The senior cornerback took matters into his own hands by finding the end zone on both defense and special teams in the Sabers' 46-30 win at Aiea.

"He was a big part of our win last Friday," Campbell coach Amosa Amosa said of Bunting, a 5-foot-9, 150-pound transfer from Texas.

Bunting, who also made five tackles in the game, gave the Sabers a boost going into halftime with his 50-yard scoop-and-score on the final play of the second quarter.

"(Aiea) was trying to do a double pass and when the guy cocked his arm back the ball slipped out of his hands and we didn't hear a whistle blow so he just picked it up and took it in," Amosa said. "That was very big for us. I mean, that really kind of gave us momentum to come out in the second half."

The score gave Campbell a 26-17 lead at the intermission, but Bunting didn't stop there. He kept the momentum rolling when he scored on an 86-yard return on the opening kickoff of the second half.

"Again, that really sparked us the rest of the way," Amosa said. "He's been close to breaking some here and there, so it was really nice to see him get one and it was nice to start off the half with that return."

Earlier in the first half, Bunting also recorded his second interception of the season — his first since a season-opening loss at Kahuku. The Sabers went on to recycle the turnover into their second touchdown of the night — a 1-yard run by Kawika Ulufale — which gave them a 14-10 lead at the time.

Amosa said Bunting typically draws the assignment of covering an opponents' top receiving threat. He limited Mililani's Kalakaua Timoteo — who leads the state in receiving yardage — to just two catches for 38 yards back in week three and a week later held Kailua's Martin Tigilau — the fifth-leading receiver in the state — to two grabs for 24 yards.

"He's our shutdown corner," Amosa said. "He's done a pretty good job with all the receivers that he's covered this year and on top of that he's just such a great kid, very humble, such a team player and obviously a big part of our defense."

Bunting, whose family moved from Austin during the offseason, also serves on the school's student council and has a 3.0 grade point average.

"When I was talking to the parents in our parent meeting, they told me that he had a choice to go here, Kapolei or Mililani, so he had to do the homework of looking at what school he wanted to attend," Amosa said. "Where Aaron wanted to go to school was going to determine where they were going to buy a house. Fortunately for us he said he wanted to be a Saber so they bought a house in Ewa. He's been a big plus for our team, so it's really a pleasure to have him be a part of our program this year."

The win — Campbell's first on the year — ended a five-game losing streak and kept its playoff hopes alive with just two regular-season games remaining.

"We were so happy for our kids because we've gotten close many times, but we haven't won games," Amosa said. "I know they're happy to get the burden off our chest of winning our first game, so hopefully it will help with practice this week and the way we do things from now on. It's definitely a positive step for us."

Bunting and the Sabers (1-5 overall, 1-4 Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I Blue conference) will visit Moanalua (2-4, 1-4) Saturday.

Female Athlete of the Week: Jordan Jones, Pac-Five cross country
After a runner-up finish at last year's Interscholastic League of Honolulu cross country championships, Jordan Jones is determined to best that mark this fall.

The Pac-Five distance runner — a sophomore at St. Andrew's Priory — took a big step toward that goal Saturday when she was the top local finisher at the prestigious Iolani Invitational. Jones completed the three-mile course at Kualoa Ranch in a time of 19 minutes and 0.18 seconds to place fourth overall behind three mainland harriers.

"I would say this was her most outstanding performance by far," Pac-Five coach Alton Motobu said. "This past Saturday was a shocker because I was waiting at the finish line and I saw the three mainland girls coming in and there was Jordan right there with them."

Palos Verdes (Calif.), which ran away with the team title, had the top three individual finishers in Jacquelyn Smith, Camille Hines and Alexandra Regan. Jones finished a little more than 23 seconds behind Smith, who set a time of 18:37.05.

Not bad for her first taste of competition this year.

"We've only had one practice meet and the other ILH meet was canceled, so this was her very first real race this season," Motobu said of Jones, who placed fourth at the state meet as a freshman.

The lone person to beat Jones at last year's ILH championships, Iolani's Amanda Beaman, dropped out midway through Saturday's race.

"I'm positive Jordan would have beat her anyway," said Motobu, who added that Jones is setting her sights on nothing short of first place this year.

"She's focused on being the state champion this year, so she does not have low expectations of herself," Motobu said.

Jones has been training under Motobu since she picked up the sport in the seventh grade.

"From the start she seemed to be naturally talented, so we never had to be concerned about her being afraid or not being confident; she's always seemed to be confident in her ability," Motobu said. "She's naturally talented, but she still works the hardest on the whole team. She's training very hard and remains positive and focused."

Motobu said Jones, who also runs track in the spring, has surpassed her teammates on the girls' team and regularly trains with the boys.

"Although it's an individual sport, it's a team effort," Motobu said. "The seven boys and seven girls on varsity work closely together, they push each other hard, so the team concept helps our runners very much. They work together and the other runners draw strength from Jordan and Jordan draws strength from them, too, so it works both ways."

Despite her fierce competitive spirit, Motobu said Jones is well-received by all of her teammates.

"I must say even though she is focused and works very hard, she's always pleasant, she has a sense of humor and everybody likes her; she's always surrounded by people," Motobu said.

As if that wasn't enough, the 15-year old is also taking on another role this fall as race director for the annual Keiki Fun Run on Oct. 4.

"It left me speechless. This is an endeavor that many adults wouldn't be able to handle, but I think she's going to do it successfully and it'll lead to bigger and better things in the future for her," Motobu said. "At the start of the season she mentioned that she was going to be doing that, so I thought it was going to interfere with her progress, but I don't think it has. She's been working very hard on her project and I think it's going to be a success."

Jones and the Wolfpack will next compete in the Honolulu Marathon/Kaiser Invitational this Saturday at Patsy T. Mink/Central Oahu Regional Park.
