Trojans' 'big three' led the way, but many others pitched in

In its decisive 71-28 win over previously-unbeaten Farrington Thursday night, Mililani once again put on display its vast talent and depth.

The Trojans' ‘big three' on offense of quarterback McKenzie Milton, wide receiver Kalakaua Timoteo and running back Vavae Malepeai did most of the scoring, but numerous others made their contributions toward the victory.

Among those, say, lesser-known commodoties, is slotback Rico Sallas, who made eight grabs for 68 yards. Sallas, who transferred after playing at Saint Louis last year, had recorded just nine receptions for 146 yards prior to Thursday's game.

"He's been banged up all year and any time we can get him the ball in space we do and he's a special player," said Milton, who found Sallas five times for 57 yards in the first half alone.

Sallas had a key 23-yard pick-up to move the chains late in the first quarter on a third-and-10. Mililani eventually capped the drive — which covered 58 yards on 11 plays — with a 13-yard touchdown pass from Milton to wideout Kalakaua Timoteo.

"He's definitely somebody that we need to get going," Timoteo said of Sallas, a 5-foot-10, 170-pound senior. "He's a key figure. Even though it looks like it's me, there's a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff with him — not only just Rico, but Makana Tauai and Andrew Vallasdares and Bryson Ventura — there's all those guys behind the scenes that are working for me to get open, so there's a lot of stuff that people don't see that should be brought into the light."

Early in the second quarter, Sallas caught a 14-yard pass for a first down to set-up a 20-yard touchdown run by Milton one play later. The duo connected on a 56-yard pass minutes before halftime, but it was wiped away by a holding penalty. Sallas also had a 32-yard kickoff return on special teams.

Tauai, a 5-foot-9, 170-pound senior who is listed as a slotback on the Trojans' roster, went untouched on a 64-yard run in the fourth quarter. Vallasdares, a 5-foot-11, 165-pound junior slotback, caught Milton's second of four touchdown passes on a 35-yard, first-quarter connection. Chad Senas, a 5-foot-5, 130-pound senior slotback, closed out the night's scoring on a 21-yard pass from backup quarterback Kaysen Higa in the fourth quarter.

"I don't care how we get it as long as we do it, so whatever they give us, we'll take," Mililani coach Rod York said. "The o-line definitely did a great job. We won in the trenches; that's how we won the game. It says a lot about our o-line and our slotbacks' and our wideouts' blocking that even when our two's and three's came in we still ran the ball effectively."

The Trojans ran for 304 yards, led by Malepeai's 136 yards on 15 carries. The 6-foot, 200-pound senior ran in three touchdowns, while Milton, a 6-foot, 180-pound senior threw for 284 of his team's 305 passing yards on 22-of-30 passing without an interception. Timoteo, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound senior scored touchdowns on each of his first three receptions and finished with five catches for 130 yards.

Defensively, Mililani allowed 138 rushing yards by Farrington standout running back Challen Faamatau, the state's leading rusher, but surrendered just 284 total yards and tallied four takeaways — three of them leading to touchdowns.

"I'm super proud of the defense, but then again we've just got to stay humble and work harder and get better, because when we went up to (Las) Vegas, all (Liberty) did was run the ball against us, so we had to come out and make a statement," Malepeai said. "I feel we did all right, but there's still a lot we have to get better at."

Defensive end Kaimana Padello had two of his team's three sacks, while safety Ramsey Tacadena recovered a pair of Govs' fumbles. Cornerback Kainalu Wong and linebacker Maa Tanuvasa, Jr. each had an interception.

The Trojans' next test comes in the form of eighth-ranked Kailua next Saturday.
