Top-ranked Punahou (4-0 overall, 1-0 ILH) used a 31-point third quarter to pull away from Iolani (2-2 overall, 0-1 ILH), 59-22 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I opener at Iolani's Kozuki Stadium on Friday afternoon.

"They always fight to the end and it was great for our kids to rise up and take advantage of some match ups. Iolani is well-coached and disciplined and make you earn everything you get," said Punahou coach Kale Ane, on Iolani.

Nick Kapule passed for 301 yards, four touchdowns and an interception. Eamon Brady led the Punahou receivers with seven catches for 143 yards and three touchdowns. The Buffanblu got 527 yards of net offense for the game.

"It was the o-line and receivers making plays for me. Those four receivers, they are my best friends and we have that connection," said Kapule. "Each person did their jobs and we came out successful."

"He (Kapule) made the most of it, we feel very comfortable with all three of our quarterbacks. Having Wayne back there and the line, the receivers making catches, it was really everyone working together," said Ane.

Ephraim Tuliloa went 5-of-9 passing for 55 yards and a touchdown before giving way to Kapule. Tuliloa had 66 rushing yards.

Kapule threw a 35-yard touchdown to Ethan Takeyama and later a 27-yard touchdown to Judd Cockett.

Tai-John Mizutani threw a 5-yard touchdown to Tamatane Aga to make it, 28-9. On a fourth-and-goal, Mizutani found Makekau for a 7-yard touchdown as Iolani trailed, 28-15 going into halftime.

The Raiders got within 28-22, after Mizutani passed it to Makekau for a 9-yard touchdown with 8:48 to go in the third. Makekau led the Iolani receivers with six catches for 107 yards.

The Buffanblu redeemed two interceptions into scores to pull away for good. Aaron Woo intercepted Mizutani's pass and two plays later, Kapule found Brady for a 16-yard score. Seyddrick Lakalaka intercepted another pass and Kapule threw it to Brady again for a 30-yard touchdown to make it, 45-22.

"We came prepared and they are a good team. We were rusty in the first half, but second half we put it together and we executed. The quarterbacks did a good job and made their reads to find us downfield," said Brady.

Jet Toner went 8-for-8 for PATs and made a 43-yard field goal.

Taulapapa added two more rushing touchdowns to initiate running clock to start the fourth. He rushed for 66 yards on 14 carries for the game.

The Raiders will play No. 2 Saint Louis (2-0 overall) in the first game of the ILH double-header at Aloha Stadium on Sept. 18 while the Buffanblu will play fifth-ranked Kamehameha (3-0 overall) for the nightcap.
