WAHIAWA — For the third week in a row, the Waianae football team went on the road and came away with a win.

Jorell Pontes-Borje threw a pair of first-half touchdown passes and Javen Towne ran in two scores after halftime to lead Waianae to a 50-28 win over Leilehua before a crowd of about 1,000 fans at Hugh Yoshida Stadium Friday night.

The Seariders, who are ranked eighth in the ScoringLive/Hawaiian Electric Power Rankings, got 22 points off turnovers, including an 85-yard pick-6 by Mosiah Brame, to improve to 3-1 overall and 3-0 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I Red conference.

The Mules, who were coming off a bye last week, fell to 0-3 overall and 0-2 in league play.

"Our boys played hard," said Towne, who found the end zone on runs of 1 and 5 yards. "It was a real physical game. Our o-linemen pushed real hard, opened up holes and us backs just hit it hard."

Waianae used 12 different ball carries to rush for 190 yards — all but 50 of which came in the second half — and finished with 12 first down via the ground game.

Jurick Valdez finished with a game-high 56 yards rushing on eight carries to lead the Seariders' ground game.

"We try to filter them in so we can keep them fresh so at the end we still have fresh legs going," Waianae first-year coach Walter Young.

The game remained scoreless until the 8:53 mark in the second quarter when Pontes-Borje hit Royce Carrick for a 20-yard touchdown pass on a third down to cap a seven-play, 67-yard scoring drive.

Connor Murakami hit a 21-yard field goal on Leilehua's ensuing drive to make it a 7-3 game with 6:40 left in the first half.

Waianae answered the score with a nine-play, 67-yard scoring drive that ended with a 19-yard scoring strike from Pontes-Borje to Isaiah Freeney.

The Mules pulled within 14-10 late in the second quarter on Kona Andres' 11-yard touchdown pass to Jadan Gilliland.

Pontes-Borje took over at quarterback in relief of Quinn Searle, who started in place of Jaren Ulu. Ulu sat out the first half due to a reported violation of team rules, but played the entire second half. He threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Kade Ambrocio late in the third quarter.

Young said it wasn't a foregone conclusion that Ulu would go under center after halftime.

"We had some thought about that, but we use Jorell at other positions, so it was a no-brainer," Young said. "Two guys would be in so we went with that."

Andres was picked off for a second time on the first play from scrimmage of the second half by Dayten Weber. That turnover set-up Towne's 1-yard score, which gave Waianae a 21-10 lead.

Leilehua's Elijah Kahoopii returned the ensuing kickoff 63 yards and Andres hit Keough for a 15-yard score two plays later.

Murakami hit a 19-yard field goal one play into the fourth quarter to close the Mules within 28-20.

However, the Seariders went on to score 22 of the final 30 points of the game to pull away from the Mules. After Towne's second rushing score, Brame stepped in front of an Andres' pass and took it back for the 85-yard score.

"I was just trying to do my job, cover over the flats," Brame said. "It was pretty much a cherry-picker, so I just took it, followed my blocks and I really just have to thank my linebackers and my d-line because they rushed and they forced that pass to happen."

On the first play of Leilehua's next drive, Dalton Rajowski stripped Anthony Ugliano of the football following a short pass reception and Ikaika Paaoao-Ahina recovered the fumble for Waianae. Ezekiah Moniz-Hopeau recycled the turnover into a 7-yard touchdown run for the Seariders' last score.

The Mules, who turned it over four times in the contest, closed the scoring with Andres' 6-yard touchdown pass to Keough. They finished with 273 yards of total offense, but managed just 13 yards rushing, and finished 4 of 14 on third-down conversions.

"The defense, we always come out to make turnovers and we try our best to play our Waianae defense like always," said Brame said, who was all smiles as he headed toward the team bus. "It's pretty sweet coming off a season that wasn't so hot. We like to start off strong and we're going to try to end strong as well."

It was the Seariders' third consecutive win after a season-opening home loss to Kamehameha.

"It's huge," Towne said of the road win. "Leilehua is a real tough team and getting the win over them really bumps up our morale."

Leilehua visits Castle (2-2 overall, 2-1 OIA D1 Red) Friday, while Waianae visits McKinley (0-4, 0-3) Saturday.
