KANE'OHE - Against one of the O'ahu Interscholastic Association's top defenses, Castle quarterback Jaymason Lee lit up Windward skies last Friday night with 28 completions in 42 attempts for 369 yards and three touchdowns to help the Knights stun No. 2-ranked Farrington, 29-28.

Lee, a 6-foot, 185-pound senior, picked apart the Governors' secondary by going to nine different receivers on routes varying from deep streaks to short screens.

"We just tried to execute on every play," Lee said. "When we do good on the running plays, the passing plays open up. I could count on the offensive line to give me time, and the receivers did an incredible job catching the ball."

Things started clicking early, as Lee connected with Ryan Kealoha on a 41-yard TD pass down the right sideline midway through the first quarter to help the Knights jump out to an 8-0 lead. Later, after Farrington took the lead back at 14-8, Lee hit Joshua Kong on a 46-yard scoring strike and Adam Aquino's extra point put Castle ahead at halftime, 15-14.

Then late in the fourth quarter, with the Knights trailing, 28-22, and facing third-and-7 from the Govs' 21, Lee and Kong connected again on a swing screen pass to the right flat. Kong followed his blockers toward the middle of the field and darted to the left corner of the end zone. Aquino's PAT made it 29-28 with 2:51 remaining, and the Knights held on for their first victory over their OIA Red Conference Eastern Division rivals in the past six tries.

"His offensive line protected him well, they gave him time to get comfortable in the pocket," Farrington coach Randall Okimoto said. "He kept throwing those screen passes, and we did a poor job tackling. His receivers would make us miss."

Kong led the way with five catches for 139 yards, and Jaques Hough added five catches for 62 yards. Noah Makainai chipped in with four receptions for 42 yards, and Timothy Torres contributed three catches for 33 yards.

The Governors, who entered the game at 3-0, had allowed only 303 passing yards total before Friday.

Castle coach Nelson Maeda said his team showed resiliency, especially given its recent history vs. the Govs and a disappointing loss at Moanalua in the Red East opener two weeks ago. The Knights are now 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the Red East.

"This is a big win, because we lost the last five times we played Farrington," Maeda said. "They've dominated us, so this was a good confidence and morale booster. It was a good test of character, and our guys never gave in. Even when we were behind, they kept plugging.

"That's very encouraging to see."
