KS-Hawaii's Calicdan, Kamehameha's Dung tabbed for weekly honor

Male Athlete of the Week: Daylen Calicdan, Kamehameha-Hawaii baseball
The sacrifice of sleeping in has paid off nicely for Daylen Calicdan.

Calicdan, a junior second baseman for the Kamehameha-Hawaii baseball team, is one of eight players that can be found in the school's weight room every morning before class. It should be no surprise then, that Calicdan has a .424 batting average with a team-best 17 runs batted in.

What's more telling of Calicdan's power are his four home runs on the year. Three have come at the pitcher-friendly Warriors' field, including a three-run shot against Hawaii Prep Friday afternoon.

"Our field is 400 (feet) to centerfield, 365 to the power alleys and 340 to the lines," Kamehameha-Hawaii coach Andy Correa said. "The last one (Calicdan) hit was against the wind, to left center, about 380. None of the home runs he hit were cheap."

Calicdan's home run came in the first inning of game one of a doubleheader against Ka Makani in a Big Island Interscholastic Federation Division II semifinal best-of-three series. He batted 3 for 3 in the game, also drawing a walk and scoring twice. The Warriors won the game 9-4. In game two, Calicdan went 2 for 4 with a bases-clearing double, four RBI and a run scored in a 15-1 win for his team.

"He's hitting the ball well this year and it's been like that for the last three years, actually," Correa said of the three-year starter. "He's always been a good athlete and he just continues to work hard to improve his athletic ability and physical ability."

Kamehameha-Hawaii has made it to the last two D2 state finals, but lost to Maryknoll both times. Correa said his players are hoping to get over the hump this year.

"The kids are really driven to try and finish and they understand how hard it is and that's why they just put in the work," Correa said. "A lot of the kids are motivated by trying to get back to the state championship and trying to do well. We just have a lot of great kids and they really work hard and so the core of the majority of the starters go in early and lift and they play baseball year-round."

Correa said many of them sacrificed playing other sports to dedicate more time to baseball. including Calicdan, an All-Hawaii selection at shortstop last year.

"He made a big commitment to trying to improve himself and he's just a great kid," Correa said. "He's a real savvy player, he holds us together, he knows what he's doing all the time and he's an honor student. We're very lucky to have somebody like him."

The commitment is continuing to payoff for the 5-foot-9, 170-pound Calicdan.

"He always had pop, but now I think it's even more evident and his power numbers are up," Correa said. "He's got legit power."

Calicdan is just one of the hot bats in the Warriors' lineup. Centerfielder Kobi Candaroma (.567 BA, 13 RBI, 12 R), shortstop Jaisten Cabatbat (.517 BA, 8 RBI, 13 R) and third baseman Makana Aiona (.432 BA, 14 RBI, 10 R) have terrorized BIIF pitching all season.

"We've been very fortunate that they're having good years," said Correa, whose team is No. 8 in this week's ScoringLive/OC16 Baseball Power Rankings.

Kamehameha-Hawaii (10-1) will play second-seeded Konawaena (5-5-1) in the league championship series this week. The teams will play a 3 p.m. doubleheader Thursday and, if necessary, a third and deciding game Saturday, at Wong Stadium in Hilo.

Female Athlete of the Week: Kamalani Dung, Kamehameha softball
With the regular season winding down, Kamalani Dung is just starting to heat up.

The senior pitcher on the Kamehameha softball team was dominant last week in a pair of wins. Dung struck out 18 batters in a 14-0 win over Saint Francis Wednesday and five in a 8-0 win at Mid-Pacific Friday. The 5-foot-7 right-hander scattered six hits against the Saints and held the Owls to just two hits.

"She's turning it on right now," first-year Warriors' coach James Millwood said of his Fresno State-bound ace pitcher. "That Saint Francis game was one of the better games I saw her pitch all season for us. She had good command of all of her pitches, she kept a good pace and good tempo and she didn't rush herself."

Saint Francis coach Randy Langsi praised Dung in his conversation with Millwood after the game.

"He said that was the best he's ever seen her," Millwood said.

Dung, a fourth-year varsity player, is now 8-1 on the year with a league-best 1.12 ERA. In 50 innings pitched, she has 77 strikeouts against 12 walks and allowed 14 runs (eight earned) on 30 hits. She has not allowed a run in her last three starts, all complete-game wins. Dung has not walked more than two batters in any of her 10 appearances this season.

"That was one of our goals that we set for her when we first starting working with her early in the season, was to cut down on walks and to hit her spots, have good command and location, and I think she's done that," Millwood said.

Millwood said Dung, along with her battery mate and fellow senior, Rachel Ogasawara, have been a big part of the Warriors' success this year. Ogasawara, a four-year starter behind the plate, will play at the University of Washington next year.

"I think the two of them really get things going for us," Millwood said. "They're the best at their positions, so we're fortunate to have a top pitcher and a top catcher that work well together."

Ogawasara was a First Team All-Hawaii selection last year, while Dung was named to the Second Team.

For Dung it's all about being at ease on the rubber, Millwood said.

"This is my first time working with her, so I just know what I saw in the past and I think her presence on the mound is improved and she's feeling comfortable," Millwood said. "Her change-up has really helped out everything else and she's being consistent with her off-speed pitches."

Millwood said Dung is "happy-go-lucky," for the most part, has flips the switch before the start of a game.

"You'll see her singing and dancing and playing around. All the girls love her," Millwood said. "She has a great personality, she's a lot of fun and the players like to be around her, (but) when it comes to game time she's a real intense competitor and a battler and the other players feed off of her."

The Warriors (11-1-1) are No. 2 in this week's ScoringLive/OC16 Softball Power Rankings and tied with top-ranked Maryknoll atop the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I standings heading into the final game of the regular season Wednesday.

Kamehameha will host Iolani at 4 p.m. that day, while Maryknoll will take on Saint Francis at 4:30 p.m. at Ala Wai Field. If both teams end the day with identical records, there will be a one-game playoff for the regular-season title and a state-tournament berth on Friday.
