MAKIKI — Kamehameha moved back into the win column with a 25-22, 21-25, 25-15, 25-15, four-set win over host Maryknoll in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I contest at the Clarence T. C. Ching Gymnasium Friday evening.

Outside hitter Kahiau Machado racked up a double-double of 16 kills and 20 digs to help the Warriors stave off the Spartans on Senior Night. Kamehameha improved to 10-3 in league play while Maryknoll suffered its third straight loss and dropped to 6-8.

"We're really just trying to focus on making less errors because that's what's been hurting us this season," said Machado. "When it comes to playoff time, that's going to be a key factor in who wins the game. We're just trying to work on the little things, get the passes and just stay disciplined."

Machado was one of three Warriors who had over 10 kills. Naone Cannon, who sat in the second set, tied Machado with 16 and David Kaaa had 11. Nainoa Barlan-Garcia added seven and Kobe Young had six more to round things out.

Setting up Kamehameha's stable of attackers was Kamoku Panee with 36 assists. The Warriors had a rotation of three hitters to start the season, but have run most of the offense through Panee as of late. He added 12 digs, three blocks, two aces and a dump for an all-around performance.

"I knew I was good enough to play with these boys," said Panee. "I just needed a chance that coach gave me. I took it and just ran with it."

Although Kamehameha's hitters were knocking balls down, Maryknoll was keeping balls up. Libero Zach Franquez had 18 digs and Kanalu Demelo had 13 more to lead the Spartans' defensive effort.

"Maryknoll is a really good team," said Machado. "The only thing holding them back I would say is their size. They play really good defense and they control the ball really well. Whenever we play them this year they're always testing us so it was a good win today."

Kamehameha had the early advantage, leading by as many as eight points, 17-9 in the opening set. After timeout was called, Maryknoll went on a 9-4 run to make it a three-point game, 21-18. The Warriors had match point after a kill from Cannon, but gave up two straight kills to Braden Kimura to make the score 24-22. Kaaa's ensuing attack down the middle clinched the first set for Kamehameha.

The second set was a much different story. Maryknoll dictated the flow of the second game and kept Kamehameha at bay throughout the entire set. The Warriors had three ties and never led in set two.

"I think mentally we just weren't there and the energy was low," said Machado. "We weren't being intense. I don't think we were being aggressive with the ball. I think that's another thing we need to work on. When things are going down, we just need to let go of the past, let go of the mistakes that happened and move on to the next play."

Set three was a tight one early as both teams traded points until the score was 7-all. After the Warriors were able to side-out on a Maryknoll serving error, Kamehameha went on a 11-1 run to take full control of the set. Panee helped seal the set with a block and an assist to Kaaa for the match point.

With momentum on their side, the Warriors claimed the match with a 25-15 win over Maryknoll in the fourth set.

Demello had 15 kills to lead the Spartans on offense. Kimura added nine kills and Jaylen Cain added seven kills and three blocks. Setter Andrew Caraang dished out 32 assists and had eight digs, an ace and a dump.
