EWA BEACH - Ian Kahaloa was his usual self in firing a one-hitter and No. 3 Campbell beat No. 10 Pearl City, 4-0, Wednesday in Oahu Interscholastic Association Western Division baseball at the Sabers' field.

The Sabers (9-2) clinched a first-round bye for next week's 12-team OIA tournament. They will play No. 2 Mililani (10-1) Friday night at Hans L'Orange Park to determine the division title and order of seeding. The top two teams from both divisions draw first-round byes for the tournament.

"We didn't play it out to be a big game with the boys, our attitude and our speeches," Campbell coach Rory Pico said. "But we knew it was a big game. We knew, we win today, we clinch the bye. The bye is important. You get to set your pitching lineup, so it's pretty good."

The Chargers (7-4) needed to win for a chance at landing a first-round bye Still, they are good enough to be the West's third seed and will play the East's sixth seed, Roosevelt (2-9) in next Wednesday's opening round of the tournament.

"It was important in a sense where we get the opportunity to sit second if we were to take this ballgame," Pearl City coach Gavin Concepcion said. "But I still like where we're at. We still think we're in a pretty good spot. We get some things tightened up before we get into playoffs, I think we'll be OK."

The game was played in front of dozens of pro scouts, the norm for nearly all of Kahaloa's outings this season. He was clocked in the 88-92 mph range, according to one of the scouts.

Kahaloa (7-0 overall, 3-0 OIA) allowed only a first-inning single to Tyler Kushima. He walked a season-high two and hit two batters. He had a modest seven strikeouts, his second lowest output in eight starts (including preseason). He threw a season-high 105 pitches. He has yet to allow an earned run this season in 44 innings and has 78 strikeouts to five walks.

"I did whatever I could to pitch today," Kahaloa said. "It's been awhile since I threw. I didn't feel good in the first couple innings, but after that, I started feeling my curve, slider and changeup."

His last start was March 28 at Mililani. The Trojans won, 2-1, in eight innings, but Kahaloa did not figure in the decision.

No Charger reached third base. Twice, Kahaloa allowed two runners to reach, but pitched out of those jams, including the seventh inning. He allowed a lead-off walk to Sam Prentice in the third, but made a nice play off Nicholas Au's sacrifice attempt to nail the lead runner on the play.

Unlike Kahaloa, the Chargers' pitchers had command issues. Starter Dane Kaneshiro, the losing pitcher, was tagged for four runs, three unearned in part to his throwing error in the Sabers' three-run second. The Sabers sent eight batters to the plate in which Kaneshiro hit three batters.

With one out, Kila Kapihe and Tryzen Patricio were each hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second. Jake Mendoza bunted to move the runners, but Kaneshiro, who fielded the bunt, threw wildly past first, allowing Kapihe to score, courtesy runner Shane Shimizu to take third and Mendoza to reach safely at first. With runners at the corners, Bula Sprinkle squeezed home Shimizu and moved Mendoza to second. After Jobe Ibana was hit by a pitch, Arcano's ground single to left scored Mendoza to give Campbell a 3-0 lead before Kahaloa popped out to short.

Campbell added a run in the fourth, again due to command issues by Kaneshiro. With one out, Sprinkle walked on four pitches and stole second. Iberian followed with a walk and Arcano was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Sprinkle scored when Kahaloa grounded out to short to make it 4-0 before Villanueva grounded out to second.

"Dane didn't have his best stuff today, but he competed as best as he could," Concepcion said. "We kind of ran into a buzz saw in Ian (Kahaloa) and that made it tough for us to make a run at coming back."

The Mililani-Campbell game on Friday will be on OC 16.
