Kill: H. Hogland (IOL) 12 kills

Iolani swept Mid-Pacific Institute, 25-18, 25-11 in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu matchup at the Raiders' Lower Gym on Thursday night.

The Raiders snapped a two-game losing streak to improve to 3-6 in the ILH standings, while the Owls dropped their fifth consecutive game to fall to 2-7.

Hugh Hogland led Iolani with 12 kills and John Lee added six kills for the Raiders. Carter Katase and Erik Yamada combined for 12 assists.

"We wanted to get back and get some redemption today. Our teammates fed off each other and started passing. Luckily enough they passed well enough where I could kill it," said Hogland.

Hogland and coach Carl Rallita commented the team felt loose during pregame warmups and that energy carried throughout the entire game.

"The start before the first serve, our kids were different in pregame. This is the loosest we've been and had a good extensive warmup. When we got out to the lead, it was expected at that point because we looked relaxed. We played a good squad and for us to come out with that lead, we were happy," said Rallita.

Iolani jumped out to an early 7-0 lead and managed to push the lead to double digits, 18-8 after Hogland's kill. The Owls outscored the Raiders, 7-4 after Lamar Carter's service ace forcing the Raiders to call timeout. Iolani held on to win the first set, 25-18.

"We continued to flush plays and move onto the next one. When the score got tighter, it was a good indicator for us how we were going to react to that. They responded well tonight and it started with the pregame," said Rallita.

"We came out here like how we played in our tournament and we played at a high-level and it carried us throughout the whole match," said Hogland.

The Raiders got off to a fast start in the second set, before MPI cut it to one, 7-6. From there Iolani went on a 8-0 run to push the lead and never looked back. They managed to go up by as much as 11 and used a late 4-0 run to end the match and the game.

"We're not an oversized team and have to play scrappy. If we don't play scrappy we're going to lose a bunch a points that we could've had so we have to play scrappy in order to win. Mid-Pac had to play scrappy too so it was really entertaining," said Hogland.

"In this situation where plays were being made, the kids are rallying around each other. It's contagious and we had a tough one the other night so this was a good way to rebound," said Rallita.

MPI's Kaimi Haas had four of his five kills for the game in the first set.

The Owls will play at Maryknoll (4-5) on Apr. 7 while the Raiders host first place Punahou (9-0) on Apr. 4.
