WAIPIO — Pearl City sent 20 batters to the plate in a 14-run sixth inning to rally past Kapolei, 16-6, in an Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I West softball game at Patsy T. Mink/Central Oahu Regional Park Friday night.

The Chargers came back from deficits of 2-0 and 3-2 to improve to 2-1 on the season, while the Hurricanes fell to 1-1 on a blustery, chilly night in Waipio.

"I've never seen an inning like that, so it was good to see everybody get in there and contribute," first-year Pearl City coach Chad Obara said. "That inning we must have made five substitutions in that inning alone, so it was all worked out."

Kapolei held a 4-2 lead after five innings, but things came apart in the top of the sixth.

Pearl City batted around twice in the sixth. Two batters — Darian Obara and Taylyn Kimura — had three at-bats apiece in the inning.

Obara made the first out of the inning on a fly out to second base before five straight batters reached base. All five came around to score, including a pair of runs on a ground rule double by leadoff hitter Hope Casarez to make the score 6-4.

Tasaki brought home two more runs on a double to right field that upped the Chargers' lead to 11-4. Three batters later, Kristin Frost laced a double to center that plated Kang and Tasaki to make it a 13-4.

At one point, five six consecutive Pearl City batters swung at the first pitch. All of them reached base safely.

"We started out the inning taking because we wanted to make that pitcher work and once she showed that she found her rhythm again, then it was back to the same game plan as earlier in the game, which was swing away," Obara said. "We took advantage of what we saw from them."

Pearl City went on to add three more runs in the frame. Kapolei used three innings in the inning.

"We were hitting the ball real well the whole game, but their third basemen had a heck of a game. She made some plays," Obara said. "I was hoping that they would start falling in at some points and luckily it did start falling in and things worked out."

The Chargers benefitted from three Kapolei errors and a pair of walks in the inning.

Kapolei struck early with a pair of first-inning runs, but Pearl City evened the score with two runs in the top of the second. Kapolei reclaimed the lead in the third inning and took a 4-2 lead with another run in the bottom of the fifth.

Frost, who started the game at third base, picked up the win in relief of start Tyanna Kaaialii, who went 4-plus innings and allowed three runs on six hits.
