HBA's Hosaka, Campbell's Haraguchi collect weekly honors

Male Athlete of the Week: BJ Hosaka, Hawaii Baptist basketball
Hawaii Baptist boys' basketball coach George Weeks can't help but gush over BJ Hosaka.

After all, what's not to love about the guy?

Hosaka, a senior guard, is averaging 24.3 points per game — while shooting nearly 85 percent from the free-throw line — all within the flow of the Eagles' offense.

"He's a hammer," Weeks said of Hosaka. "He just comes at you and he just does what needs to get done. He just grabs his lunch pail and goes to you."

According to his coach, that's not even the best part about Hosaka.

"The kid is a phenomenal basketball player and an equally phenomenal person," Weeks said of the 5-foot-8 Hosaka. "He's a really well-rounded, very grounded, self-motivated young man who just oozes success. He's just one of those guys who you know in life who is going to do well, because he has a work ethic that is relentless and he's just as focused on the basketball court as he is in the classroom, in life and spiritually."

Hosaka was instrumental in a pair of Eagles' wins last week. He scored 32 points in a 63-54 win at Le Jardin Monday and poured in 31 in a 61-55 win at Hanalani Thursday, which helped clinch the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division II title for HBA, their first since 2009.

"When it's time to step up and put us on his back, he does it," Weeks said. "He'll be the first one to say that it's everyone else's contributions and he'll downplay his role all day long — and he's being sincere — but he's just the ultimate true team player. I mean, I hate to use so many clichés, but it's almost like they wrote all the clichés for him. If I sound proud and happy for him, it's because I am; He's one of those kids you love to have on your team and you feel like you have a chance to win when he's on the court with you."

Weeks said Hosaka, a four-year varsity member, has worked diligently to improve his jump shot over the years.

"He's worked hard on turning himself into a more consistent shooter," Weeks said. "He's highly respected and envied for his basketball ability, but he's also respected as a young man and a leader on our team. He's a great guy to build your program around."

Hosaka has drawn the respect of his teammates and opponents alike, Weeks said.

"You might not like him when he's playing against you, but you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who doesn't see a redeeming quality about BJ," Weeks said. "He's the kind of kid you want other kids in your program to emulate. I guess the best way I can put it is he's just a champion on and off the court."

Hosaka and the Eagles (10-2) conclude their season with the New City Nissan/Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division II State Championships next week.

Female Athlete of the Week: Kiley Haraguchi, Campbell soccer
The Campbell girls' soccer team needed every last minute — and then some — in its come-from-behind win over Pearl City Saturday in a quarterfinal-round match of the Outrigger Resorts/Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division I State Championships.

Pearl City held a 1-0 lead on the Sabers at halftime and jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening minutes of the second half. However, Campbell got on the board with an Aliani Lorenzo-goal soon after and equalized in the 79th minute on Aryana Cabudol's goal off a direct kick from 22 yards.

However, the game remained tied after two sudden-death, 10-minute overtime periods and went to penalty kicks. That's when Kiley Haraguchi made her mark.

The senior goalkeeper's stop on Pearl City's Randi Fontes in the third-round of penalty kicks proved to be the difference, as Campbell went on to win 5-3.

"At practice I told her how to read a player when they're taking the kick by watching their footing and the plant foot and that's where the ball will go," first-year Sabers' coach Ryan Leong said. "If you watch the video, she guessed them all correctly, she just couldn't get her hand on the first two, but fortunately she was able to on the third one."

Not too shabby considering Haraguchi was a forward — and the team's second-leading scorer — for most of the season. An injury to starting goalie Brittney Copp in the regular-season finale led to Haraguchi's position change.

"She told me at the beginning of the season that she's willing to play goalie if I needed her to," Leong said of Haraguchi. "Although she rather play forward, she stepped up to the plate when we lost our starting goalie and she's been doing an awesome job."

Leong said Haraguchi had played some goalie "when she was younger … but that was a long time ago," but Saturday marked the first time she stood in goal in a penalty-kick shootout.

"I actually gave (Haraguchi) a choice, because Aryana Cabudol, she's good in the goal on PKs," Leong said. "But she said I'm fine. I can do it. She's just a natural athlete and she's real positive."

Campbell (12-2-1) captured its first Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I soccer championship last month and has won five consecutive matches — all with Haraguchi in goal.

"Everybody is so happy for her and they support her all the way," Leong said. "They trust her in the goal and we're all just proud of her for everything she's done."

Haraguchi and the Sabers will play Iolani in a 5 p.m. semifinal Friday at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex.
