Roosevelt pulled away from Radford in the second half, 46-35 to win back-to-back Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I titles at McKinley's Student Council Gymnasium on Thursday night.

The Rough Riders claim their sixth overall OIA title and improve to 13-0 on the season as they head to the New City Nissan/Hawaii High School Athletic Association State Basketball Championships starting next week. The Rams (8-2) had their five-game winning streak snapped, but still clinch a spot in the state tournament.

"It feels amazing to win the titles back-to-back, it's awesome," said Keala Quinlan.

"From the tipoff it was a battle, Radford came out banging. They came out really strong and there was no room for us to be comfortable. They did a good job pushing the ball and getting the ball to Jasmine," said Roosevelt coach Hinano Higa.

Quinlan led Roosevelt with 15 points, Starr Rivera and Ashley Kiko added 11 each.

"It feels great and I'm speechless, we worked really hard for it," said Kiko.

Jasmine Moody, who scored 27 against Kailua in the semifinals, scored 11 of her 19 points in the second half. She grabbed 12 rebounds and shot 9 of 15 from the free throw line.

"It's tough, we tried to put pressure in a full court set so they couldn't get the ball to her, but the guards got it to her and she dominated the paint," said Higa.

Roosevelt jumped out to a 5-0 lead after Rivera's jumper. However, the Rams scored seven straight as Tanisha Elbourne hit a shot in the lane and Roosevelt called timeout at 4:26. Both teams traded baskets and Sofia Harris' drive gave Radford a 12-11 lead after the first quarter. Roosevelt shot 5 of 15 from the field and 2 of 8 from the 3-point line.

Moody scored all six of Radford's quarter points in the second. She shot 4 of 8 from the free throw line. Quinlan picked up her third foul with 1:12 remaining. Rivera hit runner to give Roosevelt a 20-18 lead going into halftime.

"In the first half we took good shots, but it wasn't falling for us. I told them to settle down at halftime and settle down, let things flow and don't force anything," said Higa. "We had to find different ways to keep our scoring going."

The Rams shot 5 of 14 (35.7 percent) from the free throw line in the first half, 11 of 24 (45.8 percent) for the game. The Rough Riders did not have any attempts in the first half.

"We shot around a lot in the first half. We didn't get that many offensive rebounds or attacked the basket so we had to do that more in the second half to get a better look," said Higa.

In the third quarter, Sharice Kawakami opened up and drained two 3-pointers to put Roosevelt up, 28-23. Quinlan hit another 3-pointer to make it 33-25. The Rough Riders shot 3 of 4 from the 3-point line in the quarter. Moody kept her team in the game and scored six of Radford's 11 quarter points.

"Jasmine played really hard tonight, I thought she battled really well. We had to change our defense in the second half and not let them pass it in," said Quinlan. "Instead of playing straight-up defense, we pinched in a little bit and played a shell on the inside so it wouldn't be easy to pass to the bigs."

"We knew they were going to give the ball to Moody so we pressured the ball more on top so they would have a harder time passing it inside," said Kiko.

At the 4:44 mark in the fourth, Roosevelt shot their first free throws of the game. Quinlan sank both free throws and after the inbounds, Kiko had a steal and layup to push the lead to double-digits, 41-31. Toward the end, Radford resorted to fouling, sending the Rough Riders to the line and managed to pull away. Roosevelt shot 7 of 12 (58.3 percent) from the line in the quarter.

As the buzzer sounded the Rough Riders celebrated and doused their coach with water.

"They were all yelling in the huddle, someone first said, 'Our road to states start now,'" said Higa.
