MAKIKI — With his team facing a one-goal deficit and just minutes remaining, CJ Harvey took matters into his own hands.

Harvey scored two goals, including the game-winner in the 75th minute, to help Kapolei remain unbeaten by rallying past Kahuku, 3-2, in a quarterfinal game of the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I Boys Soccer Tournament at Roosevelt's Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium Tuesday night.

The Hurricanes improved to 9-0-2 on the year with the win, which secured them a spot in the 12-team state tournament later this month. They also advanced to Thursday's semifinal round, where they will play Kalani, which defeated Kaiser, 3-2 in overtime, in the late quarterfinal at Roosevelt.

"The whole goal of this tournament is to qualify for the state tournament, that's our ultimate goal and obviously to get better as a team," said Ryan Lau, one of three Kapolei co-head coaches. "Kahuku was a very tough opponent."

Harvey, a senior forward, opened the scoring in the second minute to give the Hurricanes an early cushion.

"We were coming down the right and (Robert Bootes) headed it to me it was a 50-50 with me and the final defender, so I just touched it around him, was coming across the 18(-yard box) and I just lobbed it right over the keeper on my left," Harvey said.

However, the Red Raiders stormed ahead later in the first half on a pair of goals by Gabriel Pinheiro-Alves, his 10th and 11th goals of the season.

"We had the better of the play, I felt, it's just that we gave up two set plays and after that it becomes a stylistic game," Lau said. "We allowed them to sit back and win balls and Kahuku, of course, is a good, physical, athletic team, so they were able to negate some of the things we wanted to do."

Pinheiro-Alves, a senior forward, scored his first goal on a header that came off a long throw-in into the box that he flicked over his right shoulder and just minutes later, he put away a rebound off a 35-yard free kick by Nathen Fuluvaka.

"I think in this game, because we scored so early and I think because of the success in the past, we kind of laid back because there was a minute where we could have capitalize and made it 2-0 and we let them hang around and they got the two goals and they got the momentum and the style of the game became a little more direct in their favor," Lau said. "We were able to stay composed and the key is to win the ball, because once you win the ball then we can put it on the floor and that's very critical on field turf to win the ball so you can play it and connect passes and be able to switch fields; things we like to do."

The Red Raiders held a 2-1 lead at halftime, which held until the 74th minute when Kapolei's Garrison Lee booted in the tying goal, which was deflected off a Kahuku defender on the way into the net.

Just one minute later, Harvey scored the deciding goal when he split a pair of defenders and got off a right-footed shot from about 12 yards out that found the back of the goal.

"Well, really the ball just came to me," said Harvey of his 10th goal on the year. "My positioning — that wasn't really where I was supposed to be standing on the corner — but the ball just came to me and I just had to do something. It was just really reaction, my practice coming in."

Harvey, one of seven seniors on the Hurricanes' roster, said his experience served him well in the clutch Tuesday.

"Oh, definitely," Harvey said. "I've been in this situation probably two or three times, having to come back from a one-goal deficit at halftime. I wasn't nervous, but I was really driven. I knew I had to do something."

Lau concurred with Harvey's assessment.

"We're actually very sophomore and junior heavy, but our seniors are very experienced," Lau said. "CJ and our left back, Quinn Thierbach, have played in two OIA finals, been to the state semis, so we have a lot of experience on the field, so we were able to stay composed in that kind of situation.
