PEARL CITY — The Eastern Division flexed its muscles in Monday's opening round of the 12-team Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I Boys Soccer Tournament.
All four first-round games were won by teams from the East: Moanalua beat Campbell 3-2, Kaiser edged Radford in overtime 2-1, Kahuku shutout Leilehua 4-0 and Castle completed the sweep with a stunning 1-0 win over Pearl City.
DJ Chinen scored his team-leading 11th goal of the season in the 68th minute to help the East sixth-seeded Knights (5-6) upset the West third-seeded Chargers (8-3) in the nightcap at Bino Nieves Stadium.
The game was a rematch of a first-round game in last year's OIA Tournament, which Pearl City won by a score of 2-1. Castle avenged the loss to abruptly end Pearl City's season, while it has a quarterfinal date against Windward Oahu-rival Kalaheo on Tuesday. The game will be played at 5:30 p.m. at Mililani's John Kauinana Stadium.
"We knew that they were going to have a good team. We knew that they were going to attack very quickly," Knights' coach Marc LaChance said. "We also knew that if we could limit their middle possession they would go to the wings and I'm very confident with my senior fullbacks and my junior defenders that we could limit what they did out there, so we did a good enough job making them knock it wide and our game plan all year has kind of been to absorb, resist and when we take our chances, we go all out and that's what happened on the goal."
Chinen's goal, which came on a breakaway run, came in a midst of a barrage of Pearl City shots on goal in the second half. The Chargers had no less than six corner kick chances after halftime and a number of free kicks, as well, but failed to capitalize each time.
LaChance credited goalkeeper Micah Moon for keeping Pearl City's offense — which entered the game with 36 goals scored this season — at bay.
"Last year we came here and he had an amazing game as well as a sophomore," LaChance said of Moon. "It was a close loss to Pearl City and I know he was fired up. He's been big for us all year. Even though we played some tough competition in the East and they scored some, he's been pretty consistently solid when we needed him and he's been amazing in the playoffs over the last couple of years."
The Knights get another crack at Kalaheo (7-1-2), which handed Castle a 4-0 loss just two weeks ago.
"Micah Moon was not eligible to play — he received a red card the game before — and I had two senior injuries, so I'm thinking we will perform much better," LaChance said. "We're coming off of a tough game tonight with limited rest, but I think now that they know what's expected of them, we'll be able to play a little better. I think we'll be ready."
Monday's other first-round results:KAISER 2, RADFORD 1 (OT): Kevin Anderson and Giovanni Gloria each scored a goal to help the East fifth-seeded Cougars (7-3-1) get past the West fourth-seeded Rams (5-3-3) in overtime in a game played at Kahuku's Carleton E. Weimer Field.
Rashon Osborne scored the lone goal for Radford.
Kaiser, last year's league champion, will meet East champion Kalani (9-0-1) in a 7 p.m. quarterfinal Tuesday at Roosevelt's Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium.
KAHUKU 4, LEILEHUA 0: Nathen Fuluvaka, Peter Hyatt, Gabriel Pinheiro-Alves and Truman Spring each scored a goal as the East third-seeded Red Raiders (8-3) shutout the West sixth-seeded Mules (2-7-2) in the late quarterfinal at Carleton E. Weimer Field.
Kahuku advances to face West second seed Kapolei (8-0-2) in a 5:30 p.m. quarterfinal at Roosevelt Tuesday.
