The Campbell girls' soccer team had every reason to fold Thursday night, but refused to do so, instead pulling out a 2-1 overtime win over perennial-power Mililani in the semifinals of the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I Girls Soccer Tournament at Castle High School.
After taking an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Kenna Sabino in the first half and controlling much of the first half, the Sabers looked like a team that was playing its third game in four days. The 50-50 balls they were winning in the first half went the way of the Trojans more often than not in the second half.
Unlike the first half, where they put together passes on offense and used a spirited defense to smother Mililani's scoring chances, Campbell often resorted to shots from distance after halftime.
"Some of the girls were getting fatigued," Sabers' coach Randy Leong said. "We were dealing with a lot of injuries from the other games that we've played, but those girls are so strong. They were sucking it up, they were playing hard and they were not giving up."
The low-point of the second half for Campbell came in the 66th minute when Mililani's Tia Furuta scored the equalizing goal.
"Towards the ending it was a little bit tough, but we pushed through," Campbell forward Aliani Lorenzo said. "It takes each and every individual out there. It doesn't take one person. It's one team."
The Trojans continued to pepper the Sabers' goal in the closing minutes of regulation, but each time goalkeeper Kiley Haraguchi turned them away.
Overtime, however, was another story.
Campbell had the only two scoring opportunities in the extra period. Just minutes after Aryana Cabudol's free kick from about 25 yards out missed just wide right of the goal, freshman midfielder Destiny Souza put away the game winner in the eighth minute of overtime on a right-footed shot from just outside the 18-yard box.
"We're very excited right now," Lorenzo said. "I can't talk right now because I'm so happy for my team. I'm just very blessed and I just thank the Lord for everything He put us through. Even though we had trials, we just picked our heads up and we just pushed through."
The Sabers will try for their first league soccer title Saturday, when they take on Moanalua in the 7 p.m. tournament final at Castle.
