Campbell edges Aiea, 54-53, on Fernandez's put-back shot with 4 seconds

EWA BEACH - Shyanna Fernandez put back her own missed free throw with four seconds left and host Campbell escaped with a 54-53 win against Aiea Thursday night in an Oahu Interscholastic Association Western Division girls' basketball regular-season finale.

Campbell (6-4), which led 31-16 at the half, trailed 53-51 with seven seconds left when Fernandez went to the free-throw line. She made her first shot to make it 53-52, but missed the second. She charged toward the basket, fought for the rebound, then put up her shot that won it for the Sabers. Aiea's inbounds pass was intercepted to end the game.

Na Alii's 26 fourth-quarter points nearly match their output from the first three quarters (27).

The game had no bearing on the Sabers' position for the OIA Division I tournament. They will be the West's fifth seed.

But Na Alii (3-7) needed the win to be the West top seed for the Division II tournament. They are tied with Pearl City (3-7), which beat Aiea during the regular season to take the top seed by the head-to-head tiebreaker. Waipahu is the third seed.

Aiea's Kyle Johnson led all scorers with 31 points, scoring 19 of her team's 37 second-half points.

Ricka Jackson and Charis Curran led the Sabers with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Curran had three 3-pointers and Jackson had two.

While Mililani (10-0) and Roosevelt (11-0) have secured the top seeds for the West and East for the OIA Division I tournament, both divisions have three-way ties for second. Like the top seeds, the second seeds draw first-round byes.

In the East, Farrington, Kailua and Kaiser are all 9-2. Each beat one but not the other, each lost to Roosevelt and beat the same opponents. In the West, Leilehua, Nanakuli and Radford did the same. A coin toss will be held Friday to determine the seedings for those teams.

Also clinching Division I tournament berths are Moanalua and Kahuku in the East, and Campbell and Waianae in the West.

In Division II East, Kaimuki and Castle both finished 4-7, but the Bulldogs beat the Knights during the regular season to take the top seed. McKinley is the third seed.

The Division I and Division II tournaments start Jan. 30.
