Punahou, HBA are top seeds for volleyball championships


Punahou received the No. 1 seed for Division I and Hawai'i Baptist was awarded the top seed in DII for the 43rd Annual New City Nissan/Hawai'i High School Athletic Association Girls Volleyball State Championships.

Both tournaments begin with first-round play at school sites on Wednesday, with the quarterfinals Thursday, semifinals Friday, and consolation and championship finals on Saturday at Blaisdell Arena.

Punahou went 12-0 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu. O'ahu Interscholastic Association champ Mililani (14-1) is the No. 2 seed, followed by Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion Kamehameha-Hawai'i (13-3) and Maui Interscholastic League champ Kamehameha-Maui (14-1).

HBA (12-1) was the ILH DII champion. OIA White Conference champ Roosevelt (11-6) is the No. 2 seed, followed by BIIF champion Hawai'i Prep (13-4) and MIL champ Seabury Hall (12-0).

The four seeded teams in each division will receive first-round byes and begin play in Thursday's first round.

Match 7: No. 2 Mililani (14-1) vs. Baldwin-Castle winner, 5 p.m.
Match 8: No. 3 Kamehameha-Hawai'i (13-3) vs. Kamehameha-Pearl City winner, 7 p.m.

Match 6: Hilo-Moanalua loser vs. Kahuku-Kaiser loser, 3:30 p.m.
Match 9: No. 4 Kamehameha-Maui (14-1) vs. Kahuku-Kaiser winner, 5 p.m.
