SALT LAKE — After knocking off Iolani the night before, Farrington took down Mid-Pacific, 49-31 on second day of the 2014 OIA-ILH Challenge at Moanalua High School on Friday night. The Govs improve to 6-0 in the preseason, while the Owls fall to 3-3.

Ranan Mamiya and Bryce Tatupu-Leopoldo scored 13 points each for the Govs.

"It's great, people are stepping up and it's a team game. We can't win with one guy, it's all five guys," said Tatupu-Leopoldo.

Farrington raced out to a quick lead and used a 10-2 run to end the quarter. Bryce Tatupu-Leopoldo and Jake Smith combined for 11 of the Govs' 19 points in the quarter.

"I'm grateful for the opportunity on defense to execute our plays on offense. Defense we play man-to-man and do pretty good on it and created turnovers, from turnovers it led to offense and we were able to get that ‘W' over Mid-Pac," said Tatupu-Leopoldo.

"We played as a unit and got key stops and played help defense," said Mamiya.

"With a team like us, we are inexperienced in attacking the press. Credit Farrington, they are well-coached and they get the job done on the defensive end. We didn't attack it early which got us behind," said first-year Mid-Pacific coach Ryan Hirata.

In the second quarter, the Owls outscored the Govs, 12-8. Mid-Pacific used a 7-3 run to cut the deficit to 5, 22-17 after Daniel Florenco made the layup off a steal. Mamiya hit a 3 from the right corner, to give Farrington a 27-18 lead going into halftime.

"With this team, we're going to have lumps in the road, it's not going to be a perfect 32 minutes. We have to find ourselves when we get into those lulls to not stay in it as long. They are great group of kids, they're going to figure it out. We have to stay on top as coaches and get better. They're going to get there," said Hirata.

"I give credit to my teammates who dished it to me and gave me the opportunity to shoot the ball. I'm thankful for my teammates and coaches," said Mamiya.

Farrington pushed the lead to double-digits and Mamiya hit two of his three 3-pointers in the second half. Mamiya is tough to stop as he attacks the basket, but he has found a perimeter shot in the first two games and sank six 3-pointers so far in this Challenge.

"I guess I'm feeling it in this tournament, normally I'm not as great of a shooter, but if I have the open shot, I'll take it. My shot is something I try to work on, but that's the key thing I try to work on," said Mamiya.

Tatupu-Leopoldo isn't the tallest player on the floor, but against the Owls, he grabbed nine rebounds.

"It's hard to play the big man spot, especially when you're short. I do my best to create opportunities for my teammates to score," said Tatupu-Leopoldo.

Den Suehiro hit a 3 from the left corner to make it, 35-25, but Farrington outscored the Owls, 14-6 to close out the game.

Drew Kargol led the Owls with seven points and Suehiro added six points—all 3-pointers.

"We have to use games like this to grow and get better. We have a great group of guys, we have a lot of potential. It's one thing to have the potential and it's another thing to put it together, so we have to find ourselves in the preseason. We have to keep going at it and get better," said Hirata.

Mid-Pacific will play Leilehua at 2:30 and Farrington will play Punahou at 4 p.m. tomorrow on the final day of the Challenge.
