SALT LAKE — Farrington pulled away from Iolani, 66-57 in the fourth quarter on the first day of the 2014 OIA - ILH Challenge at Moanalua High School on Thursday night. It was a rematch of last season's title game, but this time, the Govs prevailed.

Jake Smith scored a team-high 21 points and made four 3's and Ranan Mamiya added 19 and three 3's for the Govs. Iolani had three players score in double-digits: Robby Mann and Pikai Winchester scored 13 a piece and Zach Gelacio added 11 points.

"I was playing this for my boys, they played Iolani in the championship game, I came from Kamehameha and I'm used to playing against Iolani, but this game was for them and I know how bad they wanted it because they came 3-points short in the championship game, and I was playing my heart out for them," said Smith.

Iolani took the lead after the first quarter and scored 10 of their 13 points in the paint and scored 34 points in the paint for the game.

In the second both teams traded 3-pointers. Zach Gelacio and Pikai Winchester hit back-to-back 3's. Ranan Mamiya scored 11 points in the quarter, hitting three 3's. Jake Smith, dribbled time off the clock, pulled up, and sank a 3-pointer before the buzzer sounded giving the Govs a 30-29 lead going into halftime.

"Ranan was on fire, he kept us in the game when we weren't hitting, he had a good game," said Smith.

Smith hit back-to-back 3's to open up the third quarter to put the Govs up, 36-29. After struggling to find his shot in the first quarter, he found a rhythm in the second quarter which carried over to the second half of the game.

"Coach was telling me not to worry about the first half, we started off horrible and were up by 1 at halftime. We came out banging in the third quarter and finished the game strong in the fourth," said Smith.

"Jake is a great shooter, once he gets that rhythm, he's hard to stop. Ranan found his range today," said Farrington coach Allan Silva.

Iolani battled back and Pikai Winchester's 3-pointer made it, 44-43 and reclaimed the lead after Robby Mann made a layup in the fourth to make it, 49-48. Farrington went on an 9-0 run capped by Mamiya's layup prompting Iolani to call a timeout.

"We tried running a zone in the beginning, but it wasn't working with the shooters in the corner. We switched over to a help man-to-man. There's a lot to improve, our man-to-man defense is not where I want it right now, but we're going to keep working," said Silva, on the defensive adjustments.

The Raiders answered with a 5-point swing after Hugh Hogland made a shot in the paint, and the Govs called a timeout to talk it over. Farrington was able to close it out on free throws as Smith and Mamiya combined for 8 of 10 down the stretch. The Govs shot 17 of 26 (65.4 percent) from the free throw line for the game while the Raiders shot 8 of 17 (47 percent). Iolani made five 3-pointers for the game while Farrington made nine.

"We expect that from them and we practice free throws in practice and it came out and made them at the right time. They were calm and poised," said Silva, on his team's free throw shooting down the stretch.

It wasn't the cleanest game as both teams combined for 29 turnovers: Iolani with 18 and Farrington with 11.

Iolani plays Leilehua at 5 p.m. while Farrington takes on Mid-Pacific Institute at 7 p.m. tomorrow.
