Baldwin's Luis, Aiea's Olanda lead top performers

Male Athlete of the Week: Keanan Luis, Baldwin football
Keanan Luis showed off a little bit of what he did all season on Saturday night.

The Baldwin senior running back rushed for a game-high 60 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries to help the Black team to a 35-28 overtime win over the White team in the inaugural Life Champion Senior Bowl at Paiea Stadium on the Kamehameha-Hawaii campus.

Luis, who is 5-feet, 9 inches and weights 200 pounds, scored on a 17-yard run in the third quarter and went untouched the go-ahead, 25-yard touchdown run on the first play of overtime.

"I'm not surprised that he did well. He's a good runner and he did a lot for us this year carrying the ball, so I'm happy for him," Baldwin coach Keneke Pacheco said of Luis, who rushed for a Maui Interscholastic League-best 797 yards on 110 attempts (7.2 yards per carry) this year. "He's a tough cookie. He's got a lot of muscle mass and he's an explosive guy. If he sees a hole, he's going to run up through it."

Pacheco said he spoke with Luis a few days before he departed for Hilo last week and offered him encouragement.

"We just alkyd about running hard and looking for the holes, reading his keys and accelerating upfield," said Pacheco, who said that Luis hadn't received much interest from colleges. "Schools like to come to Hawaii for defensive linemen or offensive linemen and not too often are they interested in our running backs or receivers, but I'm hoping he gets some kind of nibble, because I believe he can play at the next level."

After the game Saturday, Luis was honored with the award for the standout skill-position player on the Black team.

"He has all the physical attributes, the right mentality and the work ethic to be successful and he's not afraid to mix it up with a linebacker at the line of scrimmage and block," Pacheco said. "He's just one of those kids that is a pleasure to be around and is not selfish. He's a real good kid and I'm happy that I got to coach him."

Female Athlete of the Week: Sara Olanda, Aiea soccer
One game into the girls' soccer season and Sara Olanda has already tripled the amount of goals she scored last year.

Olanda, a 5-foot-1 junior, scored a hat trick Friday to lead Aiea to a 10-0 win over Radford to open the Oahu Interscholastic Association Western Division schedule.

"Sara was actually playing defense for the first half of the game, so when we actually put her up top (at forward), she put away all of her chances. She had three shots on goal and all three went in," Na Alii coach Benji Villaflor said.

Villaflor, whose team made an unlikely run to the Division I state title game after a sixth-place finish in the OIA tournament last year, was quick to point out Radford's inexperience as reason to temper one's enthusiasm.

"We can't really talk too much because Radford had a lot of girls that haven't played before and were beginning players," Villaflor said. "We have a lot to work on, but that game was pretty good. I can't say how confident we are because we didn't have to play anybody at the level of a Mililani or a Kapolei, but overall it was a good game."

With a safe lead in hand against the Division-II Rams at halftime Friday, Villaflor experimented with different lineups, which was somewhat necessitated out of a season-ending knee injury to senior forward Raisa Strom-Okimoto in the preseason.

"Last year, Sara was actually our best defender, but this year we're moving everybody anywhere, so during the second half we just decided to put her up there and see what she could do," Villaflor said. "I knew she normally plays (forward) for club soccer and we tried her there and she looked more comfortable."

Strom-Okimoto, who led the OIA with 24 goals last year and is committed to the University of Hawaii, tore the ACL in her right knee during a November tournament on Maui.

"We're kind of always telling our more experienced players — and Sara is one of them — them that even if Raisa was still playing, they still would have to step up in a big way," Villaflor said. "We try to make it a point for the other girls to step up and not necessarily fill Raisa's role, but help out and Sara has a very big role."

Olanda and Na Alii visit Leilehua Friday.
