ALIAMANU — The Hayward Farmers started off fast, then weathered a comeback by Mililani to secure a 50-47 victory Wednesday night in the 16th annual James Alegre Basketball Invitational.

The visitors from northern California jumped out to a 22-7 lead after the first quarter. The Farmers' senior forward Frank Hererra scored all eight of his points in the quarter which included 6-for-9 from the free throw line.

Mililani stormed back in the second period doubling up on Hayward 16-8 in the quarter. The Trojans' junior combo of Brandon Fears and Kalakaua Timoteo combined for 11 of the points in the quarter, with six and five respectively, to cut the lead to 30-21 at halftime.

Fears started the half off with an emphatic two handed slam that got the crowd excited. The Trojans played tough defense in the third stanza and held the Farmers to just seven points. A streak of back to back steals by Mililani's senior guard Clarence Rodriguez ended up in buckets for Cameron Muh and Timoteo. This started a 12-3 run to end the half and was capped off by two free throws from Jonathan Orpillia to end the third quarter tied at 37.

Fears came up big again the start the fourth after a blocked shot Fears raced down the court to receive a pass from senior Braiden Rosario for an easy layup and gave the Trojans the lead for the first time in the game with 7:45 to play. Fears finished with 12 points, two rebound, and two blocks.

The Farmers answered with a Farrell Johnson layup to tie and then moments later Teddy Porter scored and was fouled to take back the lead 43-39. Porter missed the free throw but down the stretch carried his team with a 5-for-8 from the line performance in the fourth quarter alone.

"We were up in the beginning and then we had a lot of turnovers and fouls, but we got back in it and kept our mind right," said Porter who finished with a double-double a game high 22 points and 11 rebounds

"Teddy's great. He's like a big teddy bear. He's a great kid and he gives it his all on the court and he exemplified it today," Hayward head coach Sunny Ajla said about Porter.

With 2:45 to go in the game Porter added his final touches with a bucket to make the score 50-43. Mililani's Timoteo answered with a drive of his own to cut the lead to five with over 2:30 left in the game. Timoteo led all Trojan scorers with 15 points, two rebounds, and a steal.

Mililani's senior guard Chanse Ramirez got a steal off another Rodriguez tip and laid it in to make it 50-47 with 2:22 to play.
Down the stretch nerves and inexperience took over for both teams as Mililani kept turning the ball over and Hayward could not hit their free throws.

With 7.3 seconds left Ramirez stepped to the free throw line for three shots after getting fouled in the act of shooting. However, Ramirez missed all three free throws. The Farmers missed their free throws after getting the ball back. The Trojans still had one last shot with 4.3 seconds left Rasario let a shot go from about seven feet from the three point line that fell harmlessly into the Farmers arms for the victory.

"The game of basketball is all about runs. We had our run and they had theirs and that's just the way it goes," Aujla said after the game. "We were lucky enough to fight them off, they're a great team and they played really hard."

Hayward arrived Monday night and will leave Sunday morning. The Farmers visted Pearl Harbor on Wednseday and plan on going to Daimond Head on Thursday. "I really want them to learn the culture while they're here. I did it when I was in high school and it's going to be a great trip for everyone."

The James Alegre Invitational continues through the weekend as the Farmers will take on host Radford Thursday night at 6 p.m.
