Kalaheo downs Saint Francis to reach semifinal round


Syenna Masaki posted 14 kills with 15 digs, five blocks, three aces and 14 assists as Kalaheo defeated Saint Francis in a quarterfinal match of the New City Nissan/Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division II Girls Volleyball State championships Thursday night.

The Mustangs (10-4) won the match in four sets, 26-28, 26-24, 25-22 and 27-25, over the Saints (11-4) at McKinley's Student Council Gymnasium.

Kalaheo, which is the No. 4 seed in the 12-team tournament and winners of the Oahu Interscholastic Association, also got 12 kills and 10 digs from Riley Lynch and 11 kills with 14 digs from Siani Yamaguchi.

Malia Luis-Mateo led Saint Francis with 21 kills and 14 digs. Alyssa Panis contributed 18 kills with 18 kills and Lacey Satele had 12 digs to go with 47 assists.

Kalaheo advances to meet defending champion Konawaena in a 5 p.m. semifinal match at Kaimuki Friday. Seabury Hall and Hawaii Baptist will face off the the 7 p.m. semifinal, with the winners meeting for the state championship Saturday at the Neal S. Blaisdell Center Arena. 

Thursday's other D2 quarterfinal results:

Seabury Hall def. Kailua 25-17, 25-10, 26-24: Shayla Hoeft put down a match-high 13 kills with six digs and two blocks and Gabby Ratte added five aces as the second-seeded Spartans (13-0) swept past the Surfriders (7-9).

Konawaena def. La Pietra 25-23, 22-25, 30-28, 25-23: Chanelle Molina registered 24 kills with 23 digs, McKenna Ventura had 15 kills with 15 digs and Celena Molina added 12 kills with 20 digs as the top-seeded Wildcats (16-0) defeated the Panthers (10-7).

Hawaii Baptist def. Hawaii Prep 25-15, 25-12, 25-15: Keri Lum had a match-high 13 kills and Emily Wada added 11 kills with nine blocks as the third-seeded Eagles (12-2) swept past Ka Makani (11-6).
