Kapaa ended the Kauai Interscholastic Federation regular season with a bang, defeating reigning league champion Kauai, 52-0 at its newly renovated home field at the Mayor Bryan J. Baptiste Sports Complex Saturday.

The Warriors, ranked No. 3 in the ScoringLive/OC16 Division II Power Rankings, improved their overall record to 6-1. They will represent the KIF in the First Hawaiian Bank/Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division II State Football Championships, which start on Nov. 8. 

"My thoughts have always been that we can compete for the state championship in Division II, I have no doubt about that. Seeing the offense put it together – it's not like we didn't score all year, we just didn't play up to our potential. Having this game with the big offense, I feel really good heading into the state tournament," said Kapaa coach Phillip Rapozo. 

Kauai, who made it all the way to the 2013 Division II state championship game, saw its season end at 3-5 overall and 3-3 in league play. It was also the last game for Kauai coach Tommy Cox, the 2013 Division II Football Coach of the Year.

The 52-point outburst was the Warriors' largest point total so far this year. The offense racked up 584 yards of total offense with 401 of those coming via the ground game. Kapaa also finished the game without ever attempting a single punt attempt.

"The funny thing is my son, Brenton Rapozo, the offensive coordinator, he always sets goals for each game. This last goal (for this game) was to have fun. We never cared about the numbers. Just have fun and keep the tempo. That was the only key thing in the game," said Rapozo. 

One of the key players that got into the fun was four-year varsity starter and captain Maka Ah Loo. The senior offensive lineman had two carries for 10 yards and a fourth quarter touchdown.

Quarterback Rudy Agoot had his most productive game of the year in the Warriors' third regular season meeting with Kauai. Agoot passed for 117 yards and a touchdown and added 108 yards and a score on the ground. He will enter the state tourney without having thrown an interception. 

"Brenton tells Rudy, ‘I don't need you to be a big play guy. Just take care of the ball and the plays will come. Rudy does what we need him to do and he had a big game," said Rapozo. 

Another skill position player that had a big game was 5-foot-6 senior Shain Davis. The versatile running back churned up 136 yards on the ground and also caught six passes for 102 yards, both season-highs. 

"Shain is the playmaker of the offense, no doubt about that," said Rapozo.

Defensively the Warriors posted their third shutout of the year. The Kapaa defense came away with four sacks and intercepted Kauai quarterback Aaron Renaud three times in the contest. 

"The defense, they fly around and play disciplined. We have depth over there so we are good. (Defensive coordinator) Mike Tresler man, that guys I unbelievable. He gets his kids ready to play every game, special teams and defense," said Rapozo.

Linebacker Austyne Carvalho-Toloai highlighted the defensive effort with six tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery for a touchdown.

Kapaa will have a week off before the Division II state tourney begins. Five of the six berths have already been decided with the last spot coming down to Big Island Interscholastic Federation members Konawaena and Kamehameha-Hawaii. The top two seeded teams out of the six team field will receive a first round bye.
