KAPALAMA HEIGHTS — No. 4 Kamehameha used a second half surge to pull away from Division II No. 2 Iolani, 42-28 in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu matchup on Senior Night at Kunuiakea Stadium on Friday night. The Warriors improve to 5-1 overall, 4-1 in the ILH while Iolani fell to 3-3 overall, 2-3 in the ILH.

"This senior class has gone through a lot of adversities. Starting last year two of our senior captains had their fathers die in the spring and we had a lot of injuries to the senior class -- not just with (Kaulana) Apelu, but other guys who weren't able to play. It's been a struggle and they've been resilient, it's been a pretty good season for them, but a lot of life lessons along the way," said Kamehameha coach Doug Cosbie.

Juniors Jordan Bayudan ran for 150 yards and three touchdowns on 16 carries and Fatu Sua-Godinet threw for 222 yards, two touchdowns and ran for 174 yards and a touchdown on 10 attempts. The Warriors gained 406 yards on the ground and averaged 9.4 yards per carry for the game.

"They're both juniors and run well, some of Fatu's runs aren't by design, some of it pass protection breaks down and he's an athlete and becoming better at quarterback and we want to be balanced and run the ball pretty well. Fatu is making a lot of strides and the line is playing well," said Cosbie.

"This is a special one and the seniors inspire us and push us so it's good to win one for them. We started off slow and we needed to pick it up in the second half and came through with a ‘W'", said Sua-Godinet.

Iolani scored the first touchdown 48 seconds into the game after KJ Pascua burst through and outran the Kamehameha defense for a 68-yard touchdown. Pascua finished the game with 12 carries for 124 yards.

"We gave them a run for their money and I thought my kids played as hard as they could. We had some breaks here and there and I cannot fault these guys for their effort," said Iolani coach Wendell Look.

After the Raiders turned it over on downs, Alika Kahaulelio ran the double reverse for 28 yards to the Iolani 25-yard line. On the next play, Jordan Bayudan ran for a 25-yard touchdown and Noah Crabbe's PAT tied the game at 7.

In the second quarter, after Dylan Kane intercepted Austin Jim On's pass, the Warriors marched 90 yards on 10 plays as Fatu Sua-Godinet found Kumoku Noa for a 25-yard touchdown.

Iolani responded in three plays to tie the game at 14 after Jim On threw a 77-yard touchdown to Keoni-Kordell Makekau. Makekau led all Iolani receivers with eight catches for 168 yards.

Bayudan rushed for his second touchdown from 12 yards out to put the Warriors back up.

"If I didn't have the linemen and the right play calling from our coaches, none of that would be possible. I'm thankful for my linemen and my team and when 11 people do their jobs, that's the result you get," said Bayudan.

The Warriors went three-and-out and punted and the Raiders received the ball with 2:03 remaining. Facing a fourth-and-11, the Warriors were penalized for defensive holding and after the penalty, Jim On threw a 22-yard touchdown to Conner Ohira and Evan Minami's PAT tied the game at 21 heading into halftime.

"I thought offensively we executed real well and did what we wanted to do and had some breakdowns here and there. Our defense was rock-solid in the first half and kept the game close and gave us a chance and that's all you can ask," said Look.

In the second half, after Iolani went three-and-out and punted, the Warriors drove 70 yards on nine plays capped off by Sua-Godinet throwing a 19-yard touchdown to Kaulana Werner.

"Iolani is a really good football team and play really tough and had a good plan. The coaches made good adjustments at halftime, some weren't adjustments, it was the kids played a little better defensively and offensively too. We got that straighten away at halftime and the defensive coaches adjusted some things and played better in the second half," said Cosbie.

"I think it was more of a team effort and didn't give up when everything was close. During halftime we fixed up everything we needed to do, executing those things helped us with the score," said Bayudan.

Six seconds into the fourth, Bayudan rushed 8 yards for his third touchdown and almost two minutes later, Sua-Godinet also rushed for a 59-yard touchdown to give the Warriors a three score lead.

"I trusted in my guys and they gave me the opportunity and I took it," said Sua-Godinet.

Tyler Teruya added a 1-yard run to make it 42-28 and Makekau recovered the ensuing onsides kick with 6:55 remaining. But Jim On threw his second interception to Mason Chow and the Raiders could get no closer as the Warriors ran out the clock.

Kamehameha will take on top-ranked Punahou next week on Friday, Oct. 10 at Aloha Stadium.

"Big challenge as coaches and players. They are the defending state champs and deservingly so and they're the best team we'll play all year, we have a week to prepare for them and hopefully we show up and execute and it should be a good game," said Cosbie.

"I think this game was a good preparation match for that game. Iolani is a very good team, they're smart, talented, and understand the fundamentals for the sport and next week we have to see our mistakes and fix it, make a game plan and execute it," said Bayudan.

The Raiders will host Saint Francis on the same afternoon at 3:15 at Kozuki Stadium.
