KAPOLEI - Quarterback McKenzie Milton turned in another usual performance with 409 yards of total offense and had a hand in four scores and No. 1 Mililani knocked off No. 9 Kapolei, 41-14, Saturday night at the Hurricanes' stadium.

Milton completed 26 of 37 passes for 296 yards and three touchdowns and rushed 16 times for 113 yards and a TD to help the Trojans improve to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I Blue. Running back Vavae Malepeai also had normal outing with 149 yards on 12 carries and two TDs, including a dazzling 47-yarder.

"You can't play uneven against a team of this caliber," Kapolei coach Darren Hernandez said. "McKenzie Milton, he is just unbelievable. He's a pick your poison guy. You blitz him, you lose contain, he'll hurt you. If you let him sit back there, he'll pick you apart…He's the guy. He's their team right now. He's their hardest guy in the state to defend."

Milton won't be wreaking havoc on defenses next week; the Trojans have a bye.

The Hurricanes have started the season 0-3 for the first time since 2010. Their losses are to No. 2 Mililani, No. 3 Kahuku and No. 6 Farrington. They visit pass-happy Moanalua on Friday.

"Happy with the performance," Mililani coach Rod York said. "The kids played hard and they played well and executed our game plan."

The Trojans actually stumbled out of the blocks, turning over the ball on their first two series. The first came after Mililani had an apparent 3-yard TD run by Milton nullified by a holding penalty. On the next play, Milton's pass went off his receiver's hands and the ball landed in Malik Smith's hands in the end zone for a touchback.

But the Hurricanes fumbled the ball away on first down, only to see the Trojans do the same one play later. Still, Kapolei could not capitalize.

"Defense kept us in the game with the turnovers and the stops." York said.

The Trojans registered five sacks, two each by Kataferu Seamalo and Kahewai Kaaiawaawa and one by Rex Manu. They also had interceptions by Quin Chanel, Ramsey Tacadena and Ty Purcell-Apana.

Mililani cashed in on special teams mistakes by Kapolei. First, a shanked punt that netted 12 yards gave the Trojans possession at the Hurricanes' 22. Milton's 14-yard TD pass to Bronson Ramos on fourth-and-12 started the momentum for the Trojans.

Kapolei's next series ended when a low snap from punt formation gave the Trojans the ball at the Hurricanes' 25. On first down, Milton connected with Bryson Ventura to increase Mililani's lead to 14-0 with 1:59 in the first quarter.

Kapolei punted again, this time setting Mililani back to its 25. But three plays later, Malepeai scrambled around the field for a 47-yard TD to make it 21-0 with 10:50 in the half.

The Hurricanes, who started their ensuing series at their 49, scored on an 18-yard TD pass from Alton Julius to Edward Kea on a post into the end zone to make it 21-7 with 8:34 in the half.

Just before the half, Chanel's interception off Julius set up the next Trojans' score, a 1-yard run by Milton with 1:25 left to make it 28-7. On the play before, the Hurricanes thought it had a turnover when Malepeai took a handoff up the middle and the ball came loose. After discussion by the officials, Malepeai was ruled down at the 1.

"That was huge," Hernandez said. "That hurt us big time. That was a huge momentum shift for us. For us, that would've been a big game-changer."

The Trojans were unsuccessful at an onside kick, so Kapolei took over at its 39. But Tacadena's interception off Julius kept the score 28-7 at the half.

Mililani took the second-half kickoff and drove 76 yards, the last yard coming on Malepeai's second TD of the game to make it 35-7.

Kapolei scored on its ensuing series on Julius' 20-yard TD to Kekua Marumoto to pull the Hurricanes to 35-14 with 1:33 in the third quarter.

A penalty on Mililani on the scoring play allowed Kapolei to kickoff from Mililani's 45. Instead of an onside try, they booted the ball in the end zone for a touchback.

"That's my fault," Hernandez said. "I take the blame on that."
