Sixth-ranked Farrington blanks Waipahu

HALAWA – This game was well decided before halftime, literally.

Due to player safety concerns, Waipahu conceded to Farrington with 4:55 to go in the first half. The Governors, ranked No. 6 in the ScoringLive/OC16 Power Rankings, were already up 35-0 at that point. With 23 players out with academics and injuries to key players during the game, Waipahu coach Eric Keola decided to call the contest off.

"It was actually a tough game to start with because we had a lot of players out (with probation) – so we had people going both ways. When we had some injuries to key players, we decided there's no way we can continue. If we put in people that don't know what they're doing, that will just lead to more injuries," Keola explained. 

Saturday night's contest was part of the Oahu Interscholastic Association's Division I crossover week between the Red and Blue conferences. These games do count toward the league's regular season standings. With Waipahu's forfeit, the Marauders drop to 0-1 in league play while Farrington improved to 1-0. 

The decision to forfeit the game came after Waipahu's Kobie Russell intercepted a pass attempt by Govs' quarterback Montana Liana. Russell stepped out of bounds after a mild return, but was hit late on the play. The end result of the play resulted in Russell getting taken off the field on a gurney and into an ambulance. Before the paramedics arrived, Russell did show signs of motion in his legs and hands while being attended to by the athletic trainers.

The unofficial word for Russell's injury was that it has something to do with his spleen. 

"We would like to finish (the game), but we got to respect their wishes. I don't blame them at the same time," Farrington coach Randall Okimoto said on the forfeit.

Farrington finished the shortened game with 197 yards of total offense while also limiting the Marauders to negative one yard of total offense.

If you take away Russell's injury, Farrington's win should be nothing other than a textbook victory. That would be the case if it weren't for the plethora of penalties called against the Governors. Farrington was whistled for 18 infractions – 10 of those being personal foul related – that resulted in 202 yards lost by penalty. Coach Okimoto says a lot of those fouls were a result of some new rule changes. 

"(If this was) last year, I think half of those plays might have been okay," Okimoto said on the penalties. "This year with this new targeting rule – hitting a defenseless player, it's a little different." 

Moving on back to the actual game itself, it was quite a night for Farrington running back Ranan Mamiya. Mamiya, a transfer from Saint Francis, rushed the ball four times for 123 yards and three touchdowns. The 5-foot-11, 155-lb senior running back had touchdown runs of 25, 61, and 30 yards. He even had two potential punt returns for touchdowns that were called back by the officials. 

"He brings a lot of speed and agility. Just a good athlete for us," Okimoto said on Mamiya. 

Farrington's other two scores came from its aggressive defense. Defensive end Seufagafaga Luafatasaga returned a fumble 22 yards for the Governors' second score of the night and linebacker Bryce Tatupu-Leopoldo returned an interception 57 yards to the house for the final score of the game. Tatupu-Leopoldo's interception was one of three that the Governors had on Waipahu quarterback Blaise De Asis. Jristin Solomon and Siaosi Pakileata made the other two interceptions. 

A bright spot for Waipahu was safety Brandon Tom who had the game's first interception. He also made two catches on offense for 31 yards.
