Saint Louis-Mililani football rescheduled for Aug. 16

Mililani athletic director Glenn Nitta confirmed via text message that the preseason matchup between Saint Louis and Mililani that was set for August 9 has been rescheduled for August 16.

Kickoff of the JV game is set for 4:00 p.m. with the varsity to follow.

Mililani was scheduled to play McKinley in the Oahu Interscholastic Association regular-season opener for both teams on that day, but the Tigers have forfeited that game due to a high number of ineligible players on academic probation. That cleared the way for the Mililani to play Saint Louis, which has an open date next week. The OIA league office gave its consent to the rescheduling early Friday morning.

"From as far as two weeks ago we heard that McKinley might forfeit because of low numbers," Trojans' coach Rod York said when reached by phone Friday. "Our game was originally supposed to be on TV and in the stadium, but they moved it (to Roosevelt's Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium) and it's a small island, you know, and coaches all know each other. We heard they had only 19 guys going into this weekend, so we already had a hint they would forfeit."

The original game between Saint Louis and Mililani was wiped from the slate — along with the rest of the weekend's non-league schedule — after the Department of Education superintendent Kathryn Matayoshi announced at a press conference Wednesday that all public schools would be closed on Thursday and Friday due to the impending impact from hurricanes' Iselle and Julio. However, shortly thereafter the wheels were set in motion to get the highly-anticipated game in next weekend.

"I called (Saint Louis coach) Cal (Lee) and said the game is canceled because school is closed and the next thing out of his mouth was, 'Well, what about a scrimmage next week,' " York said. "Originally we wanted to do a controlled scrimmage and as we were talking, we said, 'Let's just turn it into a game and re-do the preseason,' and long story short, (Mililani athletic director Glenn) Nitta and the OIA made it happen."

York said his players were initially disappointed that they would not be playing this weekend, but gracious about having another shot at the Crusaders.

"On Thursday I asked them, 'Do you guys want the good news or bad news?' and they said bad news, so I told them the school is closed so the game is canceled," York said. "Then they asked, 'What is the good news?," and I told them they'd have a rematch with Saint Louis next Saturday and they all cheered."

The Trojans are ranked second and the Crusaders third in the ScoringLive/OC16 Football Power Rankings.
