MANOA — Pearl City reaffirmed its place atop the girls prep judo world with its third straight state title Saturday.

The Chargers blew away the field at the Hawaii High School Athletic Association Judo State Championships to win their fifth crown in school history before a crowd of about 1,500 at the Stan Sheriff Center.

"I'm just happy that we could send our seniors out on top," Pearl City coach Robin Puahala said. "They deserved it so much; We worked hard all year. We had a lot of expectations being two-time defending state champions, but our girls pulled through and I'm very proud of them. I couldn't be any more happy."

Puahala's team was pegged as a heavy favorite by other coaches entering the tournament. The Chargers had a total of 14 entrants and were the only school to have a player in every weight class. They delivered on the expectations, placing in the top six in all 10 weight classes to rack up a state-tournament record 104 points.

"That says a lot (because) in my starting lineup, I have four freshmen, (so) our team is definitely (built) for the future — I only graduate three of the 12 that placed today — so I think we'll do fine," said Puahala, who was quick to praise his assistants. "Our coaching staff is second to none, in my opinion. They're there everyday, I have 20 coaches on the mat. Without them I don't think we could do it."

One of the key pieces of Pearl City's youth movement is freshman Chastyne Dolor, who won her team's only individual championship by edging Mililani's Kaylin Castro by a penalty in the final seconds of their 109-pound final.

"It's just surreal," said Dolor, who also defeated Castro for the OIA and Western Division titles this year. "I can't even wrap it around my head that I am the state champion and I helped my team to three-peat. I can't even believe it."

Castro won the weight class as a freshman last season. Her only losses this year were against Dolor.

"Hats off to Kaylin, she's a really great competitor and I'm proud of her," Puahala said. "She always gave us a hard time. Chastyne came in hard as a freshman and we've been scouting tape all year long on Kaylin, trying to get past her, because we knew that the road to the state championship goes through her."

The Chargers also got runner-up finishes from Louise Pekelo (103 pounds), Netanya Kang (129), Kayla Arakaki (139), Megan Ramos (154) and Trudi Eltagonde (172). Kim Mendez (154) and Ashlyn Antonio (220) placed third, Mikayla Abe (115) and Joen Tominaga (122) fourth, Adrienne Nazareno (98) fifth and Sara Kaaiakamanu (139) sixth.

Kamehameha and Moanalua tied for second with 41 points, Punahou was fourth with 40 points and Aiea rounded out the top five with 37 points.

Warriors' sophomore Jaclyn Fontanilla won her second straight individual title at 154 with a win by ippon over Ramos.

"I came back this year and I tried to work extra hard, because I knew that everyone would be gunning for me and I just wanted to make sure that I could come back strong," Fontanilla said. "Last year was just crazy for me and I just wanted to come back and just try my best again."

One of Fontanilla's coaches is her older brother, Jordan, who was also a judoka at Kamehameha.

"I really just wanted to make my family proud and my supporters proud," Fontanilla said.
